Cricket 1911

S ept . 2, 1911. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 485 The A lM n d ian Tour. W ith their match against Gloucestershire at the end of last week the first A ll-Indian team to visit England brought their tour to a close. Judged on results their visit cannot be regarded as a success; but it was in order to learn that the side came over, and whether they have fulfilled their object time alone can show. In some quarters the fixture-list arranged for them has been condemned as too ambitious, but seeing that the object of their visit was to acquire knowledge it was surely wise for them to meet first-class sides. T heir matches resulted thus :— Won. Lost. Drawn. Total. First-C lass Matches ... 2 10 2 14 Other Matches ................. 4 5 0 9 A ll M atch e s............................... 6 15 2 23 At times the side showed very good form, but the length of the fixture list m ay, especially in so hot a summer, have told against them. In any case, the fact that their best batsman, Major M istri, did not play after the fourth match handicapped the team to an extent which can scarcely be over-estimated. JayaR am , who was expected to score well, arrived in England in poor health and never showed his best form, and thus two men who were expected to do much for the side did not play the part which had been hoped. But in Baloo they possessed a slow left-hand bowler who was worth a place in almost any side, whilst Warden proved him self a most useful all-round performer. Both Meherhomji and Shivram batt<d skilfully at times, and the former, whose cutting gained words of praise from “ W. G .,” had the personal satisfaction of making well over a thousand runs during the tour. Pai, the crack Hindu batsman, of whom a great deal was expected, could take part in only a few matches owing to ill-health, and his absence was severely felt.
