482 CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. S e p t . 2,1911. SUSSEX v. SURREY . THE-HAT TRICK BY JUPP. Played at Brighton on August 24, 25 and 26 and won by Surrey by eight wickets. Although having the advantage of batting first, Sussex were put out for 148 on an easy wicket, H itch, who bowled at a great pace, taking four wickets for 3 1. Surrey established a long lead, Hobbs and H ayes adding 93 for the second wicket and B ird and Ducat 116 for the fourth. Bird hit splendidly, making his 1 5 1 out of 272 in two hours and three-quarters and hitting nine 6’s —three off B elt (A. E .) and six off Vine—and sixteen 4’s. Of the 68 put on in 38 minutes by the last four wickets he claimed 5 1. Apart from hard chances when 67 and 89 he made no m istake. D aring the Surrey innings Ju p p performed the hat trick in a curious manner. W ith the fifth ball of an over he bowled Strudwiek. Lunch was then taken, and after the interval he got Leveson-Gower lbw with the last ball of the over. Before he bowled again Bird hit the ball out of the ground and lost it, and Ju pp sent down his next over with a different ball and bowled Sm ith with h is first delivery. In their second innings Sussex had three men out for 42, but B elf (A. E .) and Vine put on 84 together for the fourth wicket and Leach and Holloway 103 (in 50 minutes) for the ninth. On the third day play was stopped for half-an-hour during the funeral of the late W . Howlett, a prominent Alderman of Hove. Score and an aly sis:— First innings. S ussex. Relf (R. Played at Lord’s on August 24, 25 and 26 and won by M iddlesex by an innings and 10 7 runs. H am pshire made a good start, the first wicket realising 80 and the fourth 65, but the later players did poorly in a bad light. M iddlesex, as the result of some very con sistent batting, established a lead of 3 18 . Douglas and Tarrant made 80 for the first wicket, Hearne (J. W.) and W arner 74 for the third and the latter and Hendren 5 1 for the fourth. Middlesex secured the lead with six wickets in hand, after which Kidd ran up 150 (out of 296) in less than two and a-half hoars, m aking only one m istake—a possible chance to long-off when 8 1— and hitting seventeen 4’s. He put on 1 14 in an hour with Mann for the seventh wioket and 13 7 in sim ilar time for the ninth wicket with Hearne (J. T.). D aring the latter stand 45 were ad d ed , in 15 m inutes. The M iddlesex innings lasted six hours. H am pshire’s batting when they went in again was disappointing, only three men reaching double-figures. Bow ell and White added 97 in an hour for the fourth wicket, and Sprot hit six 4's off an over from Mignon which contained two no-balls. The bowler named got rid of Bowell, McDonell and White in the course of an over. Score and analysis :— First innings. H a m p s h ire . Stone, b Hearne (J.
