Cricket 1911
S e p t. 2, 1911. CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 481 WORCESTERSH IRE v. SOMERSET. Played at Worcester on August 24, 25 and 26 and won by Worcestershire by 187 runs. Some fine hitting by Simpson-Hay- ward—he made his 60 in 70 m inutes—and H. K. Foster and good bowling by Burrows, whose dozen wickets cost only 104 runs, were the chief factors of Worcestershire’s success. Somerset never seemed likely to made the necessary 340 in three hours and a-half and, after losing three good wickets for 9, were all out for 152. Burrows got rid of Chidgey, Jo y and Bridges in four balls. In making 106 H. K. Foster hit a 6, a 5 and sixteen 4's, and made no m istake during the 70 minutes he was in. He got 17 off Jo y in an over and 16 off Hardy, and with Burns added 144 for the third wicket in 50 minutes. Score and an alysis :— First innings. W o rc e s te rs h ir e . Second innings. G L O U C E S T E R S H IR E . Played fit B ristol on August ‘24, 25 and 26 and left drawn. Although making 252 by some very even batting, Gloucestershire saw their t tal headed by 112 . Meherhomji, missed at slip when 63, made 102 by capital cricket, hitting fifteen 4’s. With K anga he put up 1 13 for the first wick»-t. Shivram al*o was seen to advantage, and Salam-ud-din helped him to add 135 for the fifth partnership. The last five wicket**, however, fell for 34. Gloucestershire scored readily upon going in again. Luc« and Roberts, after two men were out for 5 1, put on 79 together, and Roberts and Jessop added 1 5 1 for the fourth wicket in 80 minutes. The last named was quieter than usual in his methods, but hit nine 4’s. Roberts, who carried out his bat for 154, m ight have been caught when 1 1 3 ; he batted for three hours and a-half and hit twenty 4’s. The tourists were left with just over 90 m inutes in which to make 268 to win. They fared badly, and had eight wickets down for 74 when stumps were drawn. It was the last match of their tour. LE ICESTERSH IRE . Played at Manchester on August 24, 25 and 26 and left drawn. In gaining a lead of 17 5 on the innings, Lancashire owed a great deal to a third-wicket stand of 104 by Tyldesley (J. T.) and Hornby and an innings of 1 3 1 by MacLeod. The last-named made his runs out of 2 12 in 13 5 minutes, was missed when 32 and 104 and hit two 6’s and fifteen 4’s. He claimed 79 of the 93 runs added for the ninth wicket with Cook in 90 m inutes, and took his score from 52 to 10 1 in 17 m inutes. Leicestershire, going in again, improved vastly on their former display, both Knight and King making faultless hundreds. The former added 144 for the second wicket with Whitehead and the latter 1 1 1 for the fifth with Coe. When the innings was declared Lancashire were left with 226 to get in 105 m inutes, and they had made 24 for the loss of Hartley when rain caused stumps to be drawn.
