Cricket 1911

A u g u s t 26, 1911. CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OP THE GAME. 471 LANCASH IRE v. ESSEX. Played at Manchester on August 2 1 and 22 and won by Lancashire by an innings and 64 runs. In the first place it was decided to play this match at Blackpool, but afterwards the game was given to Liverpool. L a st week, however, a further change was made owing to the strikes. On the first day, when play lasted less than three-hours and three-quarters, Lancashire did well to make 235 for s is wickets, but they owed much to blunders in the field, five catches being dropped, and Makepeace, who made the highest score, being m issed ere making a run. After the fall of the first wicket Makepeace and Tyldesley (J. T .) added 80 together and, later, Hornby and MacLeod put on 53 in less than 40 m inutes. On the second day Dean and Fairclough carried all before them, only Perrin, who made the highest score in each innings, doing much. Brearley, owing to a cold, took no part in the match, Lancashire, who declined the offer of a substitute to field, having only ten men in the field. Score and analysis : — L a n c a s h ir e . A. Roberts and Barnett added 37 for the seventh wicket. Northants., despite a skilful 30 by Haywood, had eight men out for 74, but the ninth partnership put on 34 and the last 3 1. On Tuesday, when there was a late start, Thompson again bowled well, making his record for the game 12 wickets for 1 1 1 . Against Dennett and Parker Northants. collapsed for 57 and were beaten as stated. Score and an aly sis: — First innings. G loucestershire . Second innings. Played at Portsmouth on August 2 1, 22 and 23 and won by Ham pshire by six wickets. On Monday, when seventeen wickets fell for 329 runs, Rhodes batted soundly for an hour and a-half and Bates, though rather lucky, played a most useful innings of 45. Ham pshire, thanks largely to a stand of 78 by Brow n and M cDonell, led by 22 on the innings. T o such an extent was the game interfered with by the weather, that Kennedy batted on each of the three days for 18 not out. Th e player named was well to the fore, too, when the visitors went in again, taking five wickets and making a fine catch off a hot return when he dismissed Denton. Ham pshire were left w ith 13 7 to make and, Bowell, M cDonell and Brown scoring well, made the runs for four wickets. Score and analysis: — First innings. Y o r k s h ir e .
