Cricket 1911

A ugust 26, 1911. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 461 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. KENT. Played at Cheltenham on August 17 and 18 and won by Kent by an innings and 94 runs. After having two men out for 3 1, Kent ran up 334 in four hours. Woolley, missed by Barnett in the long-field when 36, made 148 out of 272 in 170 minutes, driving particularly well and hitting a 6 and nineteen 4’s. He added 7 1 with Humphreys, 89 with Huish and 1 1 2 (in 65 minutes for the sixth wicket) with Prest. On the first evening Gloucestershire scored 42 without loss, but on the following day could make little stand on a crumbling wicket against Blythe, whose day’s work showed 14 wickets for 84 runs. SURREY v. YORKSHIRE . Played at the Oval on August 17 , 18 and 19 and left drawn, a severe storm breaking over the ground 70 minutes before time, when Yorkshire were still 10 runs behind with only three wickets in hand. Strudwick, owing to an inflamed eye, did not play and Major Bush was also an absentee. Yorkshire, successful in the toss, were in the whole of the first day for 334 for six wickets, made in five hours and a-quarter. Rhodes and W ilson obtained 89 for the first wicket and the former and Denton 72 for the second. Rhodes was in for ju st under three hours for his 9 1, his only m istake being an easy chance to Rushby just before he was out. Drake and Hirst afterwards added exactly 100 together, the latter playing a splendid game and adapting his methods adm irably to the fluctuations which took place whilst he was in. Surrey lost Hobbs in Booth’s first over, but a second wicket stand of 259 by Hayward and Hayes pulled the game round to favour Surrey. H ayward’s 17 7 was a beautiful innings, marked by only two bad strokes—when 120 and 15 5 —and lasted four hours and 20 minutes and contained three 6’s and sixteen 4’s. B ird, hitting vigorously and well, put on 1 1 2 with Campbell, and, with useful scores by H itch and Sm ith, a lead of 168 was secured. In Yorkshire’s second innings Denton played delightful cricket for 83, but was lucky, and Hirst gave him such good support that the fourth wicket put on 109. Hitch again bowled adm irably and, in getting rid of Wilson, Rhodes and Drake, had only 13 runs made off him. Score and an alysis: — Y o r k s h ir e . .............. 91 First innings. Although without Spooner, Lancashire, who were assisted again by Brearley, won by a com forlable margin, but M iddlesex were unfortunate in having to bat on a rain-affected wicket on the second afternoon. For their total of 300 the home side owed a good deal to Makepeace and Sharp, whose stand for the third wicket realised 159 in two hours and a-quarter. Makepeace, hitting fourteen 4’s and making his runs all round the wicket, batted for three hours and ten m inutes without a m istake. Apainst B rearley, who was able to get a lot of work on the ball, Middlesex had eight men out for 30 and it was a stand of 69 for the last wickct which saved the side from a complete collapse. Whitehead being injured, and Lancashire’s bowling being thereby weakened, the home side decided to go in again, notwithstanding their long lead. '1 heir second innings was noteworthy only for a second-wicket stand of 83 by H artley and Tyldesley (J. T.), and M iddlesex, set 3 7 1 to win, were beaten by 83. Up to a certain point the side did so well that success seemed quite possible, but the “ t a il” did not rise to the occasion. Hearne (J. W .) and Warner put on 128 together for the third wicket, but the later players did little against the adm irable bowling of Sharp and Brearley. Score and analysis :— First innings.
