Cricket 1911

452 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECOED OF THE GAME. A u g u s t 19, 1911. LE ICESTERSH IRE y . SURREY . Played at Leicester on August 14 and 15 and won by Surrey by an innings and 3 1 runs. Good innings of King and Knight saved their side from failing badly in each innings. The former, who was seen at his best, made his 93 out of 15 4 in 13 0 m inutes, hitting a 6, a 5 and ten 4’s, and, apart from a possible chance to point when 88, made no m istake. K night batted for nearly three hours for his 74 and carried bis bat through the innings. Against H itch and Sm ith Leiceste rshire lost their first four wickets for 4 runs upon going in the second time. Blunders in the field had not a little to do with Surrey m akiog 435, for both Hobbs and H ayward, who put up 80 for the first wfcket, were m issed. The first-named, who added 96 in 50 m inutes with Bird, made his 127 in two hours and a-half and hit twenty 4’s, but should have been caught when 38. B ird was brilliant and hit a 6 and eight 4’s ere falling to a fine catch in the long-field. Campbell later showed a welcome return to form , and during the 110 m inutes he was in made some excellent cuts. Strudwick also was seen to advantage in m aking 47 not out. Played at Taunton on August 14 and 15 and won by Kent by an innings and 225 runs. Somerset were still without Lew is and Hobson, and, with ten Kent men reaching double-figures, a total of 50 1 was made in 5 hours and 20 m inutes. Woolley made his 57 out of 75 in 45 m inutes—a free and m asterly display—whilst later Prest put on 108 in an hour for the seventh wicket with H uish and 128 in 75 m inutes for the eighth with Carr. Prest made his 13 3 not out in 15 0 m inutes, hitting a 6 and nineteen 4 s, and made no m istake until he had scored 10 5. Fielder hit lustily for 10 m inutes, during which time he made 27 of the last 37 runs. Somerset in their first innings failed badly on a good wicket against Fielder, and although they improved in the follow-on they were very severely defeated. Score and analysis :— K e n t . J. R. Except during the brilliant partnership of 1 5 1 for the third wicket in 70 minutes in Worcestershire’s first innings, the batting of the visitors was very disappointing. Gloucestershire, on the other hand, made their highest total of the year, thanks m ainly to Dipper and F . B . Roberts. Dipper played a steady and valuable game but was m issed at the wicket when 39 and 46: he added 74 with Barnett, 48 with Jessop, 59 with A. W. Roberts and 139 for the sixth wicket in 70 minutes with F . B . Roberts. The last named gave a brilliant display, hitting two 6’s and twenty-four 4’s duriug the two hours he was in and making only one m istake, and that not until 126.
