Cricket 1911
AUGUST 19, 1911. CEICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 451 SUSSEX v. HAMPSHIRE . Played at Brighton on August 14 and 15 and won by Sussex by seven wickets. Although losing Mead for 2, Hampshire did so well for a time that a large total seemed assured, Bowell adding 80 with Stone and 1 7 1 (in less than two hours) with White. But the last seven wickets fell for 57, and the innings closed for 318. Bowell gave no chance in making 146 out of 266 in 2 10 minutes, and, hitting well all-round, had a 6 and seventeen 4’s as his chief strokes. Sussex had six men out for 73, but Jupp put on 84 with Chaplin and 46 (in 17 minutes) with Leach, and the last-named 89 in an hour and a-quarter with B utt, Sussex quite unexpectedly gaining a lead on the innings. On the second afternoon the wicket was somewhat worn, and Albert R elf and Vine got the visitors out for 104. Thanks to some free hitting by the younger Relf, who made 55 of the first 76 runs in 50 m inutes, Sussex won with seven wickets in hand. Score and a n a ly sis:— F ir s t in n in g s . Played at Edgbaston on August 14 , 15 and 16 and won by War wickshire by an innings and 40 runs. Lancashire did not enjoy the services of Spooner, but that fact hardly accounts for the side being defeated in such decisive fashion. In their first innings only Tyldesley (E.), who made 7 1 in just over two hours— a skilful innings, did him self justice, whilst in their second Tyldesley (J. T.) alone made very much headway. Field took a dozen wickets in the match, and in the last stage of the game obtained seven whilst only 12 runs were made off him . For the home side Kinneir and Quaife added 1 4 1 together for the third wicket and Foster, who hit fourteen 4’s, and G . W. Stephens 12 3 for the seventh in an hour. Kinneir was decidedly lucky, but Foster obtained his runs in 100 m inutes by brilliant cricket. Score and an aly sis:— First innings. L a n c a s h ire . Second innings. A. Played at Nottingham on August 14 , 15 and 16 and left drawn owing to heavy scoring. Chapman played an excellent innings on the first day, but Notts, gained a lead of 156 on the innings. H ard staff scored 118 without a m istake, and added 70 with Carr and 94 with Gunn (J.). Iremonger afterwards batted an hour and a-half for 74 and carried out his bat. Going in the second time Derby shire showed such improved form that they were able to declare at 437 for nine. Needham, who m ight have been caught when 49, carried off the chief honours with a score of 10 3, but Morton, who stayed with him whilst 130 were added for the fourth wicket, also had much to do with the improvement. Wood and Forester put on 83 together, and Corbett played a useful innings of 49. Notts, had not time to obtain the 282 set them, but in the time available scored 187 for the loss of Carr and George Gunn. H ardstaff, for the first time in his career, scored two hundreds in a match. Score and analysis :— First innings. D e rb y s h ire . Second innings. L. Oliver, b Iremonger..............
