M arch 30, 19 11. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 37 and Admiral and Lady Poore. On the second morning, thanks chiefly to Hawson, the Tasmanians led by 17 on the innings. Fifty went up in 38 minutes with only one man out, but seven wickets were down for ]07. Then Paton helped Hawson to add 83, and upon the latter’s dismissal the innings closed. He made his 82 out of 127 in 145 minutes without a chance and hit nine 4's. Llewellyn had seven wickets for 50, and but for Hawson would have had remarkable figures. By the end of the day the South Africans had made 184 for two wickets. After Commaille was out at 16, Faulkner and Strieker added 142 for the second wicket in an hour—very brisk rungetting. The latter carried out his bat for 84, but on the next day was bowled with only 4 added. Then followed a stand of 150 for the fourth wicket by Snooke and Nourse. The runs were made in 55 minutes, and Snooke, who gave no chance and hit eighteen 4’s, claimed 88 ol the number. After the fall of the sixth wicket, Nourse and Pearse put on 71 together without being separated. The former, when the closure was applied, carried out his bat for 112, made in 115 minutes—a flaw less innings which contained nineteen 4’s. The visitors made 430 for six wickets in three hours and a-half, and Tasmania were set 414 to win. For a time the bowlers appeared likely to pull off the game, four wickets being down for 65, but a stand of 109 for the fifth enabled the home side to save the match. From the Tas manians’ point of view the honours of the game clearly rested with Windsor. Score and analysis:— S outh A frica . Second innings. First innings. M. Played at Hamilton on January 27 and 28. The South Africans won by an innings and 30 runs. The batting of the XV I., who fielded with only 13 men, was most disappointing, but their fielding was excellent, the two catches by Anderson and those by Horwood and Tulloh being especially good. Strieker, in making 97 of the first 146 runs scored by his side, hit seventeen 4’s and offered no chance: with Nourse he added 72 for the third wicket. Score and analysis :— XVI. o f H am ilton. The South Africans won by an innings and 206 runs. The Ballarat ground is small, and as the wicket was perfect the South Africans naturally preferred to bat first. In 222 minutes they ran up 455 for seven wickets and then declared. The chief honours be longed to Strieker, who made 146 out of 267 in 130 minutes without a real chance, and hit eighteen 4’s. Snooke, who made two 6’s and nine 4’s, helped him to add 187 in 83 minutes, and Llewellyn ran up 67 in 53 minutes. After the fall of the seventh wicket, at 340, Pearse and Schwarz put on 115 in 46 minutes without being parted, the latter claiming 74 of the number. Schwarz hit a 6 and eight 4’s. Only 13 of the locals fielded. Ballarat never appeared likely to escape a heavy defeat, notwithstanding that in their first innings Hore and Morgan added 43 for the second wicket, and Campbell and Bailey 34 for the eleventh. Pegler dismissed Middleton, Wilson and Richardson with consecutive balls, and in the follow-on Llewellyn gained a similar success at the expense of Campbell, Hore and Morgan.
