Played at B ristol on August 7, 8 and 9 and won by Gloucester shire by 227 runs. Somerset sustained a great handicap during the course of this m atch, Lew is injuring a muscle of his arm and so being prevented from bowling and also from batting with his accus tomed vigour. Parker did well to take eight wickets for 6 runs each in a total of 172, and the lead he thus enabled his side to obtain was increased by a fine second-wicket stand by Board and A. W . Roberts, who put on 19 3 together in twro hours. Board’s innings was excellent: without m aking a m istake, he scored 13 6 out of 227 in 130 m inutes, hitting a 5 and 19 fours. In the last stage of the game Johnson was seen to advantage, but Gloucestershire won very easily. Score and analysis :— First innings. Played at the Oval on August 7, 8 and 9 and won by Surrey by 3 16 runs. Surrey placed themselves in a safe position on the first day when they made 402 for nine wickets. The first wicket yielded 86, and after Ducat had played well for 77 Strudwick monopolised attention, the wicket-keeper making 67 not out by excellent cricket and adding 94 with Goatly, 34 with Sm ith and 3 1 with Rushby. Jon es placed his men adm irably and the fielding was always keen. Notts., in three and a-half hours, were dism issed for 1 9 1 —a poor total considering the conditions. Jon es in being bowled by H itch had his off-stump broken ; H ardstaff was seen at his best, and Iremonger defended well but had poor support. Surrey’s second innings was marked by some vigorous hitting by B ush and Bird, who put on 116 together in 50 m inutes without being parted, the last 76 being made off 1 1 overs in 28 m inutes. Bird hit two 6’s—one to square-leg out of the ground off W ass—and five 4’s. Bush gave no chance during the 80 minutes he was in and made nine 4’s. Notts were set 463 to win, but only H ardstaff, who batted steadily and without a m istake, did him self justice. Score and analysis :— First innings. Hayward, c and b Gunn (J.) ...
