Cricket 1911

A ugu st 1 2 ,1 9 1 1 . CR ICKET : A W EEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 425 such a sudden bound. Perhaps a parallel case is that of Mr. Aubrey Temple Sharp, who scored a splendid innings of 216 for Leicestershire v. Derbyshire a little while back. At Itepton in 1907 Mr. Sharp made 156 runs in 10 completed innings ; in 1908 he scored 548 in nine, almost quadrupling his average. W it h his methods—he has always watched the ball well, and he has strokes all round the wicket—Mr. Sharp was bound to achieve substantial success sooner' or later. He cannot make a century every time he goes to the wicket, of course ; but one confidently anticipates that he will help his county with many another long score. That 216 is not his first real success in big cricket. He was disappointing in 1909, and, for the most part, in 1910 ; but he played very fine cricket against Kent at Tonbridge in the latter year. Messrs. C. J. B. Wood and Y. F. S. Crawford, Knight, Whitehead and Coe — the recognised batsmen of the side, John King being absent—made 176 among them in two innings each in the match ; five other men added 53; the old Beptonian contributed 123 for once out (68 and 55 not out), topping the score in each innings and playing a really great game. P rio r to this week there had been no benefit match at Sheffield since 1898, when Edward Wainwright received his and netted £1,800. J u dging from a report in a London evening newspaper, Hayes made a peculiar stroke in the course of his innings of 101 against Somerset at Taunton. “ Hayes,” says the account referred to, “ with a left-handed hit, square-legged Braund to the point boundary,” and it adds, “ This bit of resource quite amused the small number of spectators.” Is public interest in cricket declining ? Those who contend that it is may be interested to hear that on Monday 16,519 people paid for admission to the Oval, and that at Sheffield the number was only 403 less. The meeting of Surrey and Notts was the Diamond Jubilee match between the sides, the two counties having met for the first time in 1851, when Surrey won the only game played—at the Oval—by 75 runs. Of the twenty-two men who took part in that match only two—Caffyn and Sherman, both of Surrey—survive. The former scored 29 and 14, and the latter took ten wickets for 66. Of the 104 matches played between the sides, Nottinghamshire have won 44, Surrey 36, and 24 have been drawn. 1901—John T. Brown, sen. 1903—John Tunnicliffe 1904—George H. Possibles match, arranged to be played at Manchester on August 28, 29 and 30, has been cancelled. The decision was come to after a correspondence between the M.C.C. Committee, who were satisfied with the four trials already played, and the Lancashire authorities. Doubtless the lateness of the season and the inevitable expense had great weight in determining the matter. Perhaps it is not yet too late for the powers-that-be to arrange a match between the team that will go to Australia and the Best of England or Kent.
