422 C E IC K E T : A W EEK LY EECOBD OP THE GAME. A u g u s t 1 2 , 1 9 1 1 . County Secretaries. IV .—M b . A. J. LANCASTER (KENT). Although his appointment dates farther back than that of any other living Secretary to a County Cricket Club, Mr. Lancaster can safely look forward to continuing his services for several years in behalf of the Kent County C.C., for not only does he take the greatest interest in the side’s welfare and do everything (no matter at what personal inconvenience) in his power to further the best interests of Kent cricket, but many seasons are probably destined to pass ere he finds the weight of years handicap him to any extent. The official History o f Kent County Cricket informs us that Mr. Lancaster was born— at Canterbury— on April 25th, 1859. To judge from his appearance, one would be justified in assuming that the excellent volume mentioned was in error, but as his appointment dates back to March, 1885, when he was but twenty-five years of age, one must conclude that the History is, after all, correct in its state ment, and also that Mr. Lancaster is one of the youngest men of fifty-two to be found anywhere—yes, even in Kent itself. Mr. Lancaster’s predecessor as secretary was his father. This was Mr. James John Lancaster, who was Assistant-Secretary to the Club from 1875 until 1880, when, upon Lord Harris giving up the post of Honorary Secretary, he was appointed Secretary. This position he continued to occupy until his death, when he was succeeded by his son. Mr. A. J. Lancaster was educated at Christ’s Hospital, and was intended by his father for the profession of an Architect, and, after serving his articles in the office of a local Architect, Mr. John Green Hall, he became an Improver in the office of Mr. James Brooks, F.R.I.B.A., of Wellington Street, Strand, and a pupil at the Royal Academy. In 1885 he was called home by the sudden death of his father, and as he had at one time assisted him in his office, and understood the work of the County Cricket Club, he was appointed Secretary pro tern ., and confirmed in the appointment six months later. At that date there were only just four hundred members : now there are over four thousand ! For a few years Mr. Lancaster was Honorary Secretary of the St. Lawrence C.C., and played for them, but was never a great performer, as his highest average for any year was exactly twenty, and he was no bowler. A damaged shoulder and increasing business engagements caused him to retire from the cricket-field about twenty years ago, and since then he has developed a strong attachment to golf. Mr. Lancaster has continued to carry on his father’s practice in Canterbury as an accountant and auditor, and, among other appoint ments, holds that of Secretary to the Kent and Canterbury Hospital —a post he has filled since 1892.
