406 C E IC K E T : A W EEK LY EECOED OF THE GAME. AUGUST 5 ,1 9 1 1 . SURR E Y v. LANCASHIRE!. Played at the Oval on July 31, August 1 and 2 and left drawn. With Hayward, Kirk, Bush and Brearley away, neither side was at full strength, but the cricket seen was very interesting. Sandham and Bird added 95 after the fall of the fourth wicket at 137, and with nine making double-figures the total reached 320. Thanks to Spooner, who, first in and last out, made 224 in five hours, Lan cashire led by 40 on the innings. It was a most skilful display, chances when 27 and 121 notwithstanding. He put on 91 with Sharp, 79 with Hornby and 73 with Garnett, and hit 30 fours. Surrey made light of their arrears, and in three hours Hayes and Hobbs put up 242 for the first partnership. Neither player made a mistake of any kind. The innings was declared at 298 for 5 but a draw was always assured. At the end of the match Strudwick bowled whilst Harrison kept wicket. On the first day Warwickshire, with Field awa.v, did well to get Hampshire out for 283 on a good wieket, especially as Bowell and Fry made 87 for the first partnership. Kennedy and Olivier put on 88 for the last wicket, but the others did little. Kinneir’s batting dwarfed everything else in the visitors’ innings. Without making a mistake, he scored 148, making 80 for the first wicket with Smith, 121 for the second with Charlesworth and 127 for the sixth with Stephens. Newman did well to get eight wickets for 110 in the total of 420. When Hampshire went in again Bowell and Fry gave the side another good start, making 92 together in an hour and a-half, but this was put quite into the shade by Mead and Johnston who, by faultless cricket, added 292 for the third wicket. The former made his runs in 175 minutes and hit thirty-two 4’s. Warwickshire had no difficulty in playing out time. Score and analysis :— First innings. C. B. Fry, st Smith, b Hands.......
