W ith Fane away and neither of the Fosters nor Burns playing, both sides were below full strength. Essex were fortumate to win the toss, as doing so probably meant winning the match. Gillingham, by making 167 out of 289 in four hours, carried off the honours. He gave no chance, hit a 6 and twenty-four 4’s, and added 157 with Freeman and 92 with Carpenter. When seven wickets were down Bale bowled, and with success, whilst Arnold kept wicket. Essex batted for seven and a-half hours for their runs. On a rain-affected wicket Worcestershire stood no chance and met with a very heavy reverse. Score and analysis :— E s s e x . J. W. H. T. Douglas, c and b Cuffe. 34 Russell (A.
