Cricket 1911
398 CE ICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g u s t 5, 1911. CRICKET IN SCOTLAND. Holiday cricket is largely in evidence at present, and clubs have been touring all over the country. Forfarshire made their annual excursion over the Borders last week, visiting as usual the Liverpool district, where they encountered some of the leading clubs with highly satisfactory results. They generally emerge with the best of the argument and on this occasion they won all the five matches played. Why do not more English combinations make a point of arranging an occasional tour in Scotland? Twenty or thirty years ago such visits were quite common. They would find that club cricket there, which is undoubtedly making rapid improvement, was strong enough to give the best of their elevens a hard game. In this age of cheap and swift transit, with Edinburgh, Melrose, Stirling or Perth for instance as a centre, a most enjoyable week’s cricket could easily be undertaken, whilst the attractions of the surrounding country-side would materially add to the enjoyment. Spectators are usually a scarce commodity at cricket matches, and something more than mere sport is necessary to draw them out in respectable numbers. Local rivalry is the chief magnet and this accounted for a record crowd, assembled at The Pikes, Falkirk, to watch the return match between East Stirlingshire and Stenhousemuir. The finish was the only noteworthy point about the game, which Stenhousemuir won amidst great excitement five minutes from time. This club has so far had a most successful season, a result largely due to the efforts of J. Graham, a slow bowler of more than average merit, who has not received the recognition he deserves, considering that he is gathering a crop of wickets at small cost Saturday after Saturday. The Scottish team would not have been weakened by his inclusion. Selkirk and Hawick met on Saturday in a Border League match the result of which it was expected would decide the Championship for the season. Selkirk were favourites, but Hawick won comfortably in the end, scoring 158 and then dismissing their opponents for 109. The fact that Hawick took three hours to get their runs was, to say the least, by no means pleasing to the crowd of Selkirk supporters. J. Storrie, who was the chief factor in their victory, found wickets rather easier to obtain against the “ Souters ” than against the Irishmen, as his analysis of eight for fifty-three showed. For Selkirk, W. G. Grieve did well with both bat and ball, and this player ought soon to secure representative honours. Gooder of Stirling County, the old Surrey professional, secured all ten wickets in the County’s match against the Watsonians, and was the means of spoiling their unbeaten record in what was the last match of their season. This week the Indian cricketers are in Scotland. On the first three days they opposed an eleven of the Northern Counties at Inverness, and then they journeyed south to meet the Scottish representative team at Galashiels. This ought to provide a keen contest, as the Scots will put a stronger side in the field than did duty against Ireland. The visitors are assured of a hearty welcome, and they will be royally entertained during their stay. The Earl of Minto, the late Viceroy, will probably meet them at Galashiels, and the Town Council of Perth have arranged a public civic reception for them when they visit that city at the beginning of next week.
