Cricket 1911
AUGUST 5, 1911. CR ICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 395 DERBYSH IRE v. LE ICESTERSH IRE . W E E K -E N D C R IC K E T . Played at Chesterfield on July 29, 31 and August 1 and left drawn. Beyond everything else this match was remarkable for the batting of Sharp who, doing better than ever before, scored 216 in four hours and 10 minutes—his first hundred in important cricket. He hit two 5’s and thirty-seven 4’s and drove and hit to leg well. He was missed when 82 and 103, and should have been stumped when 163. With Fowke, who batted for 200 minutes, he added 262 for the sixth wicket in three hours. Chapman batted well in both innings for Derbyshire. In his first he put on 58 with Oliver and 79 with Morton, and in his second added 117 for the second wicket with Cadman. The latter, cutting and off-driving in attractive style, hit a 6 and sixteen 4’s and made no mistake until 102. When the innings was closed Leicestershire were left with 193 to make in 110 minutes, but before they could go in rain came down and stopped the match. Score and analysis :— First innings. [TheEditordoes not holdhimself responsiblefor theopinionsofhis correspondents.] AN ANECDOTE OF HIRST AND RHODES. To the Editor o f C r ic k e t . Sir,—The following anecdote, to the truth of which the writer vouches, has never as yet appeared in print, but has been carefully kept, like the solitary bottle of a rare and choice vintage, for some auspicious occasion. That occasion having now arrived (in the shape of Rhodes’s benefit) the writer presents it, with his compliments, to be uncorked by the Editor of Cricket. At the close of the season of 1902 the writer was playing in a small match for the benefit of some local charity, in which Hirst and Rhodes with characteristic good nature were also participating, their presence, needless to say, proving a great attraction. Everyone was still talking of the thrilling finish to the final Test match at the Oval, in which the last two men Hirst and Rhodes—the last hope of England—by their cool and plucky batting at the crisis of the game, gained for their country a most memorable victory by one wicket. During an interval in the local charity match, a player, whose enthusiasm for the game may be said to have outweighed his skill, approached Hirst, and, chatting over the incidents of the great match at the Oval, asked him if he had not felt nervous towards the finish. “ Nervous ! ” said Hirst, apparently surprised at the strangeness of the question; “ no, I can’t say that I was nervous. But now you come to mention it, I remember I teas a bit afraid lest the occasion might be too big for Wilfred.” Pondering over this reply, our inquisitive cricketer a little later took advantage of the fall of another wicket to propound his little query to Rhodes. “ Nervous! ” replied Rhodes thoughtfully. “ No, I was’nt nervous. Not exactly what you might call nervous. But I must say I did feel anxious lest George might get out.” Yours, etc., H u d d e r s fi e ld , July 27, 1911. A. C. DENHAM. BEDFORDSHIRE v.
