394 C E IC K E T : A W EEK LY EECOED OF THE GAME. A ugust 5 ,1 9 1 1 . KEN T v. SURREY . Played at Blackheath on July 27, 28 and 29 and won by Kent by four wickets. The home side gained an advantage on the first day, when, in reply to a total of 218, they made 154 for four wickets, ^urrey had six men out for 122, and it was due chiefly to a brilliant innings of 73 by Bush that the total reached 218. Bush made his runs in 110 minutes by faultless cricket, and with Smith added 46 for the seventh wicket and with Hitch 49 for the eighth. Bush, Hitch and Bushb.v were got rid of by Humphreys with the first, fifth and sixth balls of an over. The Kent batting was marked by a faultless innings of 118 by Seymour, who was in for 3 hours and 10 minutes and hit eighteen 4’s. With Woolley he put on 71 in 50 minutes and with Dillon 89 in 75. Rushby was put on again at 188, and he bowled with such effect that the last five wickets went down for 57 runs. Surrey’s batting was very uneven in their second innings, the first four wickets producing 183 runs and the last six 57. Bird played a fine innings of 90, and Hobbs helped him to add 63 and Bush 77. He offered two difficult chances, but played a most valuable game. The later players broke down badly against Day and Humphreys, and Kent were set only 214 to win. Hardinge made 59 in an hour and three-quarters, and after his departure Woolley hit up 42 out of 78 in 28 minutes, making 26 runs— 4 4 2 4 0 4 4 4—from eight balls from Hitch, and breaking his bat in trying a big hit off the ninth. Played at Brighton on July 27, 28 and 29 and left drawn. Although Dean, Whitehead and Brearley were away, Sussex were got rid of for 250 in their first innings. Half the side were out for 75, and it was a sixth-wicket stand of 153 by Chaplin and Cox which pulled the game round. The former gave no chance in making 111 ont of 180 in 170 minutes, and hit a six and seventeen 4’s. Lancashire started well, the first wicket not falling until 97; but Vine, going on at 132, bowled with such effect that it was only after a hard struggle that Lancashire secured a lead of 4. His six wickets cost less than ten runs each. When Sussex went in again Relf (R. R.) and Vine made 59 for the first wicket and the latter and Killick 166 for the second. During the latter stand the cricket was at times tediously slow, Killick at one period not scoring for 30 minutes. Neither gave a chance. Lancashire were set 332 to make in three hours and a-half. Hartley and Spooner put up together, and Tyldesley and Makepeace also did well, but with five men out for 205 bad light caused stumps to be drawn. Score and analysis :— S u ssex . First innings.
