A u g u s t 5, 19 1 1 CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GA \.E. 393 M IDDLESEX v. ESSEX . T H E H A T T IiIC K B I H E A R N E (j. W .) Played at Lord’s on July 27, 28 and 29 and won by Middlesex by an innings and 211 runs. On the first day Essex were dismissed on a perfect wicket for 78 in 115 minutes before lunch, their last seven going down for 21 in 40 minutes. Hearne (J. W .), keeping a good length, bowled his last seven overs for 11 runs and 6 wickets, the majority of which were obtained with “ googlies.” He got rid of Carpenter, McGahey and Gibson with consecutive balls. Middlesex obtainedalead of nearly 400 and declared. Tarrant, seventh out, made 168 out of 372 in five hours and twenty minutes, giving only one chance (when 54) and adding 124 with Warner, 105 with Hendren and 104 with Murrell. The task before Essex, when they went in the second time, was disheartening. McGahey and Perrin added 72 together, but with four men out for 102 a storm broke over the ground and caused stumps to be drawn. On the third day the; end was soon reached on the ruined wicket. On the first day the home side made 432 in four and a-half hours, the play being very attractive. Jones set a good example by making 103 out of 165 in 95 minutes before lunch without a mistake : he added 82 with Gunn (G.) and 83 with Hardstaff. John Gunn scored 94 in two hours and was well supported by Alletson and Oates. Gloucestershire had half their wickets down for 116, yet made 320, Roberts and Bell adding 102 for the sixth wicket and Merrick and Dennett 69 for the last. Roberts was let off when 19 and 62. In the second innings of Notts., Payton and Gunn (J.) added 266 together without being parted in 130 minutes. The last 90 minutes they were together yielded 211 runs. Gunn’s play was faultless, and Payton’s only mistake was when 122. Gloucester shire’s task of making 467 in about four hours was hopeless.. Barnett alone did himself justice, though Jessop ran up 45 out of 60 in 50 minutes and Dennett helped to put on 64 for the last wicket. Score and analysis :— First innings. N o tts . A. O. Foster played admirable all-round cricket, scoring 60 and 101 without a mistake and taking six wickets. In his first innings he made 60 out of 75 in 40 minutes, and in his second 101 out of 157 in an hour and three-quaiters ; altogether, 161 out of 232 in 145 minutes, hitting four 6’s and twenty 4’s. Charlesworth and Quaife also did well, the former making 93 in under two hours in the first innings, and the latter putting on 98 with Foster in the second. Yorkshire did well to make, as many as 310 in reply to Warwickshire’s 341, but the visitors had only themselves to blame, for Drake, who scored 99 and added 142 for the fifth wicket with Hirst, was missed at slip ere making a run. When set 257 to win, the side went to pieces badly on a worn wicket. The ball got up most awkwardly and in the course of ten overs Field took seven wickets for 20.
