On the first day Essex got rid of the visitors for 181 and in reply scored 172 for one wicket, but failed to drive home their advantage. Douglas bowled Spooner with his first ball and Haitley with his third, and although the third wicket added 74 and the fourth 80 the total was only 181. Tremlin bowled his last 17 balls for 2 runs and 5 wickets. Sharp, in scoring 100 in less than two hours, gave no chance. For their lead of 134 Essex owed almost every thing to Fane and Perrin, who put on 215 for the second wicket in three hours; the former was missed when 93 and 107, but Perrin’s play, though slow, was without fault. In the follow-on Lancashire showed a great improvement, Spooner and Hartley making 139 for the first wicket and Makepeace and MacLeod 16L without being parted for the sixth in 80 minutes. Tbe last-named hit six 6’s -fiv e of them off McGahey, and three of them in an over. Makepeace made some good leg-hits and drives and batted for 150 minutes. Essex managed to play out time and gained three points for leading on the first innings. Score and analysis :— First inniugs. L ancashire . R. H. Spooner, b Douglas............................ 0 A.
