Cricket 1911
374 C E IC K E T : A W EEK LY EECOBD OF THE GAME. J u l y 29, 1911. LANCASH IRE v. SUSSEX . Played at Manchester on July 20, 21 and 22 and won by Lanca shire by ten wickets. Showers limited play on the first day to two and a-half hours, and Sussex gained no advantage in winning the toss. Robert Relf played sound cricket for an hour, but the best batting in the match was shown by Spooner, who scored 87 out of 132 in 110 minutes, driving powerfully and hitting ten 4,s. Hornby remained until the first wicket had realised 67 in 50 minutes, and with five others reaching double-figures Lancashire obtained a lead of 128 on the innings. When they went in the second time, Sussex again fared badly on a treacherous wicket and were beaten by the margin mentioned. Score and analysis :— First innings. S u s s e x . E SSE X y . SURREY . Played at Leyton on July 20, 21 and 22 and won by Essex by 182 runs. The absence of McGahey and Perrin enabled Freeman and Gillingham to come into the side, and both men had a good deal to with the Essex success. Freeman made 186 runs in the match for once out, and in each innings took part in a three-figure stand with Carpenter, the pair adding 111 for the third wicket in the first innings and 100 for the sixth in the second. Freeman played attractive cricket and hit well all-round. In his second innings he hit a 5 and fifteen 4’s during the 185 minutes he was in, and made no mistake until right at the end, when he was missed at 97. Hay ward and Bush shared the chief honours for Surrey, and Campbell, who added 97 with the latter, was also seen to advantage. Buckenham, despite the very hot weather, bowled untiringly and deserved his analysis of seven for 115. The wicket had worn some what by the third day, but Surrey should nevertheless have made more than 114. Score and analysis :— First innings. E s s ex . J. W. H. T. Douglas, c Strudwick, b Rushby F.
