Cricket 1911
J u l y 29, 1911. CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 373 HAMPSH IRE v. WORCESTERSH IRE . Played at Southampton on July 20, 21 and 22 and won by Hampshire by an innings and 6 runs. Apart from Bowley, who scored a brilliant 91 in 95 minutes, hitting sixteen 4’s, no one did very much in the visitors’ first innings. Arnold, however, helped to add 56 for the third wicket and Burns 60 for the fourth. The Hampshire fielding was excellent in both innings. Fry and Bowell, both of whom batted without a mistake of any kind, made 155 for the first wicket in two hours, but Brown and Stone, who added 132 for the fifth, were both missed early. Worcestershire cut up badly after a useful start in their second innings and were beaten as stated. Score and analysis :— First innings. Bowley, c Mead, b Evans......... Pearson, c Stone, b Brown G. In scoring 316 in five hours the home side owed much to missed catches, Haywood, Seymour, Thompson and Snell all being missed. The stand for the first wicket realised 87 and for the fifth—Thompson and Snell in—88. Although 66 behind on the innings, it seemed that Yorkshire, in getting rid of Northants the second time for 118, had gained a winning advantage. The pitch had worn much at one end, however, and the bowlers being able to make the ball turn considerably Northants pulled through by 44 runs. Thompson, by taking five wickets for 45 runs, had a big share in the victory of his side. Rhodes, despite several missed catches in the first innings, had fourteen wickets in the match for 139, Score and analysis :— First innings. N o r t h a m p t o n s h ir e . Second innings. Played at Maidstone on July 20, 21 and 22 and won by Kent by seven wickets. The visitors were struggling for runs from the very start, seeing that they had six wickets down for 18 after going in first. Hendren, fortunately, stayed nearly three hours for a careful 66 not out, whilst Wormald helped him to add 70 for the seventh wicket and Saville 52 for the eighth. For being headed on the innings, Middlesex had only themselves to blume, Dillon, who made 117, being missed twice when 36. He hit two 5’s and thirteen 4’s, and took part in three useful stands, adding 77 with Hardinge (who made a splendid 68), 75 with Hubble and 50 with Huish.
