NEW SOUTH WALES v. QUEENSLAND. 1 layed at Sydney on December 24, 26 & 27. Queensland won by four wickets. Inasmuch as New South Wale3 were play ing Victoria at Melbourne, the side which opposed Queensland in this match was at far from full strength. A good team took the field nevertheless, and Queensland’s success—their third during the season in inter-State matches—was a meritorious one. It was a bowler’s m^tch on a batsman’s wicket. Cook, who h«d performed well at Melbourne, again mer, with success, his eight wickets costing less than eight runs each: he is a slow-medium right-hander with a high delivery. W. Makin, a left-hander who was making his first appearance for New South Wales, scored 71 in 80 minutes and hit eleven 4’s : he is good on both sides of the wicket, especially the off. The finest batting of the match was seen in the visitors’ second innings, when Fennelly, by scoring 61 when his comrades could make little headway, clearly brought victory to his side. During the final stage of the game Scott, whilst bowling, lost possession of the ball as he was about to deliver it, and Redgrave, seeing it pitch half-way between the creases, ran out of his ground and, whilst it was stationary, hit it into the long-field for 4. TASMANIA. Played at Sydney on December 31 and January 2. New South Wales won by an innings and 113 runs. Tasmania, upon winning the toss, put the home side iu, evidently thinking that, after rain in the night, the pitch would be difficult. As it happened the wicket was slow, and the bowlers were never able to give the batsmen much trouble. New South Wales, whose team lacked nine of the eleven which had beaten Victoria, ran up 406 in four hours and three-quarters. Barbour and McElhone gave the side a good start by making 78 for the first wicket in an hour, but their cricket was quite overshadowed by that of Minnett. who, hitting a 6 and twenty-four 4’s, mane 151 out of 213 in 150 minutes. It was a brilliant innings, marked by some exceptionally fine play on the off. He obtained his 100 in an hour and a-half without a mistake, but was afterwards missed three times. With Makin he added 68 (in 35 minutes), with Watson 63 and with Docker 52. Scott hit fiercely at the end of the innings, and of the 78 added for the last wicket in 28 minutes claimed 50. On the Monday the Tasmanians found Hordern at the top of his form and in 71 minutes of actual play— the weather caused interruptions, though for half-an-hour the game took place in heavy rain—were dis missed for 49. Hordern, even with the wet ball, kept a capital length and broke both ways, quite mystifying his opponents. The follow-on was noteworthy only for a stand of 163 for the fourth wicket by Hudson and Eltham, both of whom were missed. H or dern took a dozen wickets in the match for 98 runs.
