Some capital bowling by Wass and a fine not-out innings of 143 by Hardstaff were the chief factors of the visitors’ success. In Lancashire’s first innings Tyldesley (J. T .) and Sharp added 102 in 80 minutes. The former was out in an unusual manner. In stepping out to play Wass to leg he turned the ball to Oates, the wicket-keeper, who was standing back, and had his wicket thrown down before he could regain the crease. In the first innings of Notts. Jones and George Gunn made 98 for the first wicket, and in the second Hardstaff put on 99 for the second wicket with Gunn (G.) and 145 for the third with Payton.
