Cricket 1911

J u ly 22, 1911. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 353 M IDDLESEX y . SOMERSET. Played at Lord’s on July 13 and 14 and won by Middlesex by an innings and 214 runs. This match was noteworthy for the batting of Hearne (J. W .), who scored 234 out of 479 in five hours and a-half, hitting thirty 4’s and adding 201 for the second wicket with Tarrant and 133 for the seventh with Saville. He might have been stumped when 26 and 166 and should have been caught and bowled when 134; but it was a fine innings, marked by capital placing to leg and good driving. He reached three figures in three hours and 200 in five hours. Tarrant, inmaking 113, offered only one chance—to the bowler, when 33, and Mann, inobtaining24, scored 20 in an over from Braund. The Somerset batting was very weak, the side being dismissed twice in the course of a day on a run-getting wicket for 287. Score and analysis :— M idd lesex . For obtaining a lead of 169 on the innings, Kent owed almost everything to Hubble, who made 189 out of 298 in just under three hours without a mistake. His strokes all round the wicket were perfect and he hit thirty 4’s. With Prest he added 59 in 45 minutes, with Fairservice 75 in 40 and with Blythe 134 in an hour. Kent’s three last wickets added 242 runs in two hours. In the second innings of Sussex the brothers Relf put on 98 together and Chaplin and Dowling 60, and with ei"ht members of the side making double-figures the total reached 321. Rain interfered with the play on the third day and the match was drawn. Score and analysis:— S ussex First innings. Played at the Oval on July 13, 14 and 15 and won by Worces tershire by 9 runs. For their success the visitors, who were without Burrows, owed a great deal to Pearson, who played two very sound innings of 99 and 78. In his first he added 76 with Arnold and 93 with Turner, and was well supported by Burns and Cuffe, who put on 74 together, but in his second he received such poor assistance that the next highest score was only 24. Surrey gave a deplorable exhibition on the second day, for, despite a tenth-wicket stand of 57 by Hitch and Strudwick, the side were dismissed for 147. In trying to get the 354 set them to win, however, they were seen in a different light altogether. Hayward, batting steadily for three hours and 5 minutes, put up 87 for the first wicket with Hobbs and added 82 for the second with Hayes. Bird subsequently dominated matters and only just failed to pull off the game, being last out. He put on 55 with Campbell, 50 with Smith and 22 with Kirk. When Strudwick went in 26 were wanted to win, of which number all but 10 had been made when Bird was caught-and-bowled one-handed off a lob from a very hard return. The Surrey captain had played a most plucky and skilful game, being always watchful but missing no chance of hitting powerfully when possible to do so with safety. When 54 he might have been caught at slip, but the mistake detracts but little from the merit of his performance. Score and analysis:— W o r c e s te r s h ir e . First innings. Second innings.
