Cricket 1911

J u ly 15, 1911. CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 343 GENTLEMEN y . PLAYERS. Played at Lord’s on July 10, 11 and 12 and won by the Gentlemen by 180 runs. The Players had a stronger bowling side than at the Oval, but both Kinneir and George Gunn were away, whilst the Gentlemen lacked Brearley. Fry’s innings of 69 was the chief feature of Monday’s play. It was a display of confident, brilliant and masterly cricket, marked by perfect play on the leg-side and excellent cutting. Warner helped him to add 82 for the third wicket, but four men were out for 148. Douglas, though slow, then played a*very valuable game, adding 70 with Day and 72 with Foster, who brought off some capital hits. Barnes always kept the batsmen playing the ball and deserved his figures. Douglas supplemented his innings with effective bowling, taking five wickets for 53 in a total of 201. Bad batting certainly had something to do with the small score, and the fact remains that there were only two stands of any lengtb, 53 being made for the first wicket and the same number for the fifth. Fry did not enforce the follow-on, but, going in again himself, put up 122 for the first wicket with Spooner. Both men played splendid cricket, though the captain was not in such brilliant form as on Monday. W ith five others reaching double-figures, the innings was closed, leaving the Players five hours in which to make 423 to win. The final stage of the game was marked by a splendid display by Hobbs, who carried his bat through the innings for his first hundred of the season. With Hayward he made 51 for the first wicket, with Tyldesley 77 for the second and with Hardinge 57 for the third. The others, however, gave him poor support, Le Couteur proving too much for the majority. Hobbs hit 24 fours and offered one chance—when 94. Score and analysis :— G en tlem en . First innings. C. B. LE ICESTERSH IRE v. HAMPSHIRE . TWO SEPARATE HUNDREDS BY MEAD. Played at Leicester on July 10, 11 and 12 and left drawn. In making 412, after having five men out for 158, Hampshire owed a very great deal to Mead and Brown. The former batted three hours and three-quarters without a chance and put on 81 with Stone and 96 with Brown. The last-named also played faultless cricket and obtained his 124 in three hours. Cole, who batted an hour for 33, helped to put on 86 for the seventh wicket. For the home side King monopolised the honours, batting two and three-quarter hours for 118 and making only one mistake—a hard chance when 87. His chief strokes were two 6's and fourteen 4’s, and in partnership with Lord he added 94 in an hour and a-quarter. On Wednesday Mead, batting admirably, made his second hundred in the match, but Leicestershire, thanks to Wood, managed to save the game. Score and analysis :— H am psh ire . First innings. Mead (C.
