Cricket 1911
334 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 15, 1911. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE y . SUSSEX . Played at NottiDgham on July 6, 7 and 8. In winning by six wickets after going in against a total of 490 and being behind on the first innings, Notts accomplished one of their best per formances for some years. When play commenced on the third morning everything pointed to a draw, for only 20 wickets had fallen and the wicket was still all in favour of run-getting. Sussex collapsed in surprising fashion, however, and Notts, making 228 in 140 minutes, won with three-quarters of an hour to spare. Their victory was the more remarkable from the fact that both George Gunn and Iremonger were assisting the Players at the Oval. On the first day 500 runs were made for eleven wickets in five hours and a-quarter, Sussex completing their innings for 490 and then, in the last 15 minutes of the day, getting rid of Lee for 10. After Vine had been dismissed scoreless, Killick and Robert Eelf added 180 for the second wicket in two hours and the latter and Smith 149 for the third in 78 minutes. Eelf might have been caught when 51, but he made no other mistake in scoring 169 out of 334 in three hours and a-half. Driving was the chief feature of his innings, and he hit two 6’s and twenty 4’s, obtaining 30 runs off the last two overs he received. Notts had Lee, Whysall and Hardstaff out for 79, but Jones and Gunn put on 117 together and the former and Payton 95. Gunn played faultless cricket in making 107 out of 173 in less than two hours and a-half, and, off-driving well, hit a 6 and ten 4’s. Oates and Payton, each making twelve 4’s, subsequently added 73, but Notts were 38 behind on the innings. On the third day Sussex were very disappointing, for, although Smith and Killick put on 54 together and Albert Eelf and Cox 67, the innings closed for 186, Lee’s leg-breaks taking four wickets for 17. Notts., when they went in the second time, had a race against time, and won comfortably. Jones and Hardstaff put up 61 for the first wicket in 40 minutes and the latter and John Gunn (who hit ten 4’s) added 152 for the second in 80. In his excellent 89 not out Hardstaff hit thirteen 4’s. Played at Worcester on July 6, 7 and 8, and won by Worcestershire by three wickets. When they set Worcestershire 275 to win, it seemed likely that Leicestershire would obtain their first success of the season. They got seven wickets down for 197, but the great heat evidently told upon the fieldsmen and the remaining runs were obtained without farther loss. In their first innings Whitehead hit a dozen 4’s in scoring 71, and with Wood added 88 in just over an hour. King also did well, and Burrows came through with an analysis of seven for 68. In leading by 48 when the game was half-over, the home side owed much to Burns and Turner (who added 69), to Simpson-Hayward (who made 50 in 50 minutes) and to Bighton and Ponsonby (who put on 61 for the last wicket). At the end of the second day, however, Leicestershire were 195 runs on with six wickets in hand, thanks chiefly to a first-wicket stand of 110 by Wood and Knight. Wood batted for Shree hours and ten minutes without a chance and hit five 4’s. As already stated, Worcestershire pulled off the game.
