Cricket 1911

J u l y 15, 1911. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 333 ETON v. HARROW. Played at Lord’s on July 7 and 8 and won by Eton by three wickets. Harrow, after being headed by 143 on the first innings, made a fine recovery and in the end were beaten by only three wickets. Beyond doubt Wilson, a brother of the old Cambridge captain, was their best batsman, for not only did he make most runs for either team but obtained them when things were not going well with his side. In the second innings he received valuable help from Gregson, who helped to put on 76 in 55 minutes for the third wicket. When Harrow lost their seventh wicket in the second innings they were only 31 runs on, but the stand of 64 in 40 minutes by Falcon and Morrison enabled the side to set Eton 112 to win. From the Eton point of view the feature of the match was the batting in the first innings of Wigan and Colman, whose stand for the second wicket realised 113, and of Tufnell, the captain, in the second. The match was played in glorious weather and under such ideal conditions for run-getting that 1,182 runs were scored for thirty wickets. Two very good sides had been got together, but in the absence of Hayward and Hirst the Players’ team was not representative. On the first day the Gentlemen had placed them selves in a safe position by scoring 403 for six wickets. Spooner’s batting dwarfed everything else. In just under five hours he made 190 out of 353 by faultless and delightful cricket, scoring well all round the wicket, but especially to the off, and hitting a 6, two 5’s and nineteen 4’s. With Warner, who made 91 with only one mistake —a chance of stumping when 54—he added 208 for the third wicket in two hours 50 minutes, and with Campbell 50 in 40 minutes. Day and Foster subsequently put on 64 in 35 minutes for the seventh wicket, the former, when the innings closed for 466, carrying out his bat for 67. Iremonger bowled untiringly through the innings and was the best bowler, though his figures do not show it. The Players’ innings, like the Gentlemen’s, was marked by a great individual triumph, Kinneir batting nearly five hours and a-half for 158 out of 361. He might have been caught at the wicket off Brearley when 92, but made no other mistake,- and hit fourteen 4’s. Tarrant stayed with him whilst 51 were added and George Gunn helped him to put on 145 in a couple of hours, of which number the latter, whose only chance was one to slip when 75, claimed 83— a stylish innings marked by good foot-work. The third day’s play, when a draw was practically certain, was rather tame in comparison with what had gone before. Still, Johnston showed most attractive cricket in making 82 out of 177 in two hours and a-half. With Fry he added 66 for the second wicket and with Warner 68 for the third. The Players were set 269 to win in two hours, and, after losing Tarrant at 3 and Gunn at 5, and having half their wickets down for 95, successfully played out time. Kinneir was in 100 minutes for 53.
