332 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 15 ,1911 . holland coats for one thing. Then the seating accommoda tion was most unsatisfactory, especially at the Oval, where there was not a complete circle of seats and all were back less. Fancy reporters sitting on a form in front of the scoring-box making notes on their knees, and in the tropical sun of the last few days. Might I here suggest to the Surrey Club, who have in every way studied the Press, that in this weather their well-filled silver cups might be sent up into the Press-room. The late Lord Londesborough, I remember, never forgot this little courtesy during the Scarborough Festival. And I can give this hint because it is my fixed rule never to touch any liquid at a cricket match ; consequently I am a complete stranger to thirst. Brit the harder- worked reporter may not be. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. Played at Northampton on July 6 and 7 and won by Northamptonshire by six wickets. Although their batting was most uneven, the tourists obtained a lead of 29 on the first innings. Meherhomji and Kanga made 51 for the first wicket and the latter and Warden added 50 for the second. Kanga batted 80 minutes for his stylish 65 and hit eleven 4’s. After the county had lost five wickets for 49, Haywood and East put on 33 together, but the innings closed for 104, Baloo’s analysis being six for 58. Weak batting when they went in the second time caused the visitors to lose the advantage they had gained. Only Warden, Pai and Baloo met with any success, and the County obtained the 179 runs necessary for the loss of only four wickets. Vials and Seymour made 71 for the opening partnership and Smith and Thompson 69 for the third. Seymour was very lucky, but Vials’ display was faultless. Score and analysis :— First innings.
