Cricket 1911

326 OEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 8, 1911. CRICKET IN SCOTLAND. The following eleven has been chosen to represent the Gentlemen of Scotland against the Gentlemen of Ireland at Partick on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of this m onth:— W. H. Thorburn (Peebles County) (capt.), T. A. Bowie (Clackmannan County), R. G. Tait and G. K. Chalmers (Forfarshire), D. Chapel and P. S. Fraser (Grange), W . Webster (Aberdeenshire), G. L. D. Hole (Edinburgh Academicals), J. Grieve (Poloc.), A. McNab (Uddingston) and W . Storrie (Hawick). A satisfactory feature about the team is that it is wholly Scottish. Anglo-Scots and domiciled Englishmen have been rigorously excluded, which is as it should be, inasmuch as it tends to encourage the native product. Otherwise, however, the side is not giving general satisfaction. The task of the selectors was by no means enviable, but a glance at the names will show that too many who have done nothing this season to justify their selection are included on reputation alone, and that others are left out whose consistently good form should have made them certain of places. The bowling appears lamentably weak for a first-class match, and no one approaches the standard of the leading professionals who are with us. Chapel, Webster and McNab all played in this match last year and were failures ; they have done nothing since then of any note, though McNab is, perhaps, worthy of a further trial. There is a sad dearth of amateur bowling talent up North. If Ireland places her strongest side in the field, Scotland will require a big slice of fortune’s favour to emerge victorious. Many people eagerly scanned the venues of the Test matches in the hope that one of the contests between the Australians and South Africans would be given to Glasgow, but there was never really the least chance of this, as a suitable enclosure could not be obtained. Cricket grounds in Scotland were not laid out to accommodate Test match crowds, and, even if there had been a suitable ground, it is doubtful if the spectators would roll up in sufficient numbers to justify the choice. A week’s exhibition cricket by each eleven will satisfy most cricket enthusiasts here. Forfarshire, who generally do well against English elevens, made a very poor show against Essex last week. C. J. Kortright showed that he is still a great bowler by bundling them out without the least trouble. To them he was practically unplayable, and “ Captain ’ Douglas was merciful when he rested him all the second innings. Eight wickets for 27 was rather a nasty knock for Forfarshire. Among the many fine scores hit on Saturday, perhaps the most noteworthy was that •of Boyes, the veteran Arbroath professional, who against the Grange was undefeated with an innings of 115. He is one of the numerous band of Yorkshiremen who act as professionals to Scottish clubs. For over twenty years he has been scoring runs and getting wickets among them, and he looks like going on for a while yet. FO R FA RSH IRE v.
