Cricket 1911

J uly 8, 1911. CBICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. 323 OXFORD UN IVERSITY v. CAMBRIDGE UN IVERSITY . Played at Lord’s on July 3, 4 and 5. THE HAT TRICK BY IRELAND. Oxford University won by 74 runs. Glorious weather was experienced on each of the three days and a finely-contested match was seen. Winning the toss, Oxford naturally took first innings, and, in making 203 in just under three hours and a-half, batted in very uneven fashion. After losing Evans and Campbell for 4, Twining and Bardsley made the stand of the innings, the pair adding 114 in an hour and a-half. The former, however, was missed when 8 and the latter when 15. Bardsley made 71 of the 114 mentioned, driving and hitting to leg well and making a 6 and nine 4’s. At lunch four wickets were down for 141, but after the interval Ireland got rid of Braddell, Altbam, Brougham and Lagden in six balls, the three last named with consecutive deliveries. All four wickets fell at 157, and of the remaining players only Yidler reached double-figures. Twining was la3t out for an excellent 71, which contained Feven 4’s. Ireland came through with the excellent analysis of five for 25. Like their rivals, Cambridge made a poor start, Mulholland being caught at 11. Then, however, followed two useful partnerships in which Collins participated, 40 being added for the second wicket with Saville and 75 for the third with Falcon. At the end of the day, however, seven men were out for 167, but, thanks to Kidd and Baggallay, a lead of 16 was obtained on the innings. Oxford made light of their arrears upon going in the second time, Evans and Twining giving the side so pood a start that at lunch on Tuesday they were still together with 82 on the board. At 96, however, both as well as Bardsley were sent back, and, with Le Couteur and Braddell doing little, half the side were out for 119. Then followed a series of such useful stands that the total reached 328. Campbell ancl Altham commenced the revival by adding 38 in half-an-hour. Altham subsequently put on 55 in 40 minutes with Brougham— the two last choices—and the latter and Lagden 76 in three-quarters of an hour. Brougham drove vigorously and pulled well, and in making 84 out of 146 in 95 minutes hit two 5’s and eleven 4’s. Cambridge had 315 to make to win, and by the time stumps were drawn on Tuesday had scored 28 without loss, Collins and Mulholland in. On the third day the pair remained together until 86, when Mulholland was bowled. Collins was seen to much advantage in muking 50, but Le Couteur proved very difficult and at lunch eight men were out for 192. Lagden got rid of Prest by a brilliant effort, but all the others had been accounted for by Le Couteur without the aid of the field. Baggallay added 37 with Holloway, but Oxford won very comfortably. Le Couteur’s analysis for the innings was the splendid one of eight for 99. Score and analysis :— O xfo r d U n iv e r sity . First innings. A. J. WARW ICKSHIRE v. SURREY . Played at Edgbaston on July 3, 4 and 5. Drawn. Everything on the opening day, during which the home side completed their innings for 501, was put into the shade by a faultless innings of 200 by Foster, who drove with great power and hit three 6’s, two 5’s and twenty-one 4's. He made his runs out of 307 in three hours and added 125 for the fourth wicket with Parsons. His 50 was reached in 45 minutes, his century in 100 and his 150 in 140. Before he went in Charlesworth, by free cricket, had scored 54 out of 68 in 50 minutes. When Surrey went in Hayward played a capital innings, making his 70 out of 140 in two hours and three- quarters. He was run out in an unlucky manner, Quaife (the bowler) half-stopping a return hit from Goatly and turning the ball on to the stumps whilst Hayward was just outside the crease. After the fall of the ninth wicket at 182, Hitch and Strudwick put on 130 together in 67 minutes, the former hitting very freely and making 50 in half-an- hour. Warwickshire preferred to go in again to making the visitors follow-on. Kinneir and Smith put up 176 for the first wicket in two hours and a-quarter, the latter, who hit a 6 and ten 4’s, making 113 of the number. At 206 for three wickets the closure was applied, leaving Surrey with 396 to win in four hours. Hayward was o ut at 21, and although Hobbs stayed until 78 the credit of saving tbe game rested chiefly with Hayes, who carried out his bat for a most praiseworthy 137 when stumps were drawn. Ilushby also played pluckily at a most critical time, helping to add 83 after eight wickets had fallen. Score and analysis:— W a r w ic k sh ir e . First innings.
