Cricket 1911

314 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 8, 1911. K E N T v . L E I C E S T E R S H I R E . Played at Dover on June 29 and 30. Kent won by an innings and 179 runs. Leicestershire, after seeing Kent run up 481 for six wickets on a perfect pitch on the first day, had to bat on a rain-affected wicket when their own turn came, and were beaten by an innings and 179 runs. They were handicapped in Shipman being required for the Trial match at Lord’s, but Kent, for the same reason, were without Seymour, Woolley and Hardinge. Humphreys and Day added 126 together in 80 minutes, Hubble and Hutchings 146 in 95and Jennings and Huish 112without being separated. Hubble made his first hundred for Kent, batting for 160 minutes without a mistake and hitting eleven 4’s, the majority of them fine off-strikes. Leicestershire failed completely in their first iunings, but showed a great improvement in their second, when they played aless cautious game. Despitea first-wicket stand of 68 by Wood and Burgess, half the side were out for 112. Mounteney, however, hitting two 6’s and eight 4’s, ran up 58 out of 80 in 40 minutes and King batted well for an hour and a-half. Score and analysis:— K ent . E. W. The University threw away their chance of winning when, on the third afternoon, they decided to go in the second time in preference to making the scratch side follow-on. On the first day they scored 461 in just over five hours, but the fielding left much to be desired, several catches being missed. Evans and Bardsley put on 105 in 70 minutes for tbe second wicket, and Braddell and Lagden 121 in an hour for the eighth. Braddell obtained his 92 in two hours, whilst Lagden, hitting a 6 and five 4's, scored 77 in half that time. There was a lot of rain during the second day, and on the third the first innings of Leveson-Gower’s XI. was finished off for 224. Crawford played a good innings of 51, and when the University went in again carried all before him. Score and analysis:— O xfo rd U n iv e r sity . First innings. Second innings. A. J. Everything in this match was dwarfed by the innings of 263 not out by Kiunier, which is the largest ever played for Warwick shire. He reached 50 in 100 minutes, 100 in three hours, and 200 in five hours and a quarter, and batted altogether for seven hours and ten minutes. He hit 27 4’s, 13 3’s and 32 2’s and was missed when 84 (at the wicket), 125 (at point), 153 (in the long-field) and 232 (at slip). With Parsons he added 118 in 100 minutes and with Byrne 151 in similar time. The Hampshire batting was very weak and quite unworthy of the side. In their second innings Field dismissed Evans, Newman and Olivier with consecutive balls. Score and analysis :— W a r w ic k sh ir e . F. G.
