Cricket 1911

J u l y 8 ,1911 . CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 313 TEST TRIAL MATCH. ENGLAND v. THE REST. Played at Lord’s on June 29, 30 and July 1. England won by ten wickets. It cannot be said that the second Trial match appealed strongly to the public, for only 4,008 paid for admission on the first day and 2,400 on the second. On the Saturday, with the result a foregone conclusion, only a handful of spectators were present. Fane, who had been chosen to lead The Rest, excused himself, and in con sequence Warner went over from the England team and captained the side. Neither Barnes nor Hobbs—the latter owing to indisposition—accepted the invitation to take part in the match, Barnes’ absence being much regretted. Foster bowled admirably on on the first day, but the batting of The Rest was very weak. After the interval he took six wickets for 50, making his analysis for the innings seven for 76. Fry was seen at his best in making 93. His cutting and driving were excellent, and he was always master of the bowling. Gunn played stylish cricket for an hour and helped to add 81 for the second wicket. England obtained the lead with six wickets in hand, and, owing chiefly to a stand of 170 by Iremonger and Rhodes, were 220 ahead when each side had completed an innings. Iremonger was inexcusably slow at times and took two hours and a-quarter to score 59. Rhodes, missed when 1 by Woolley at slip and when 73 by Burns at cover-point, on each occasion off Smith, made 121 in three hours and ten minutes. He hit fourteen 4’s and took an hour to obtain his last 21 runs. In a poor light at the end of the second day The Rest lost half their wickets for 63, Iremonger dismissing Lewis, Seymour and Hearne in in the course of an over. On the third morning Hardinge and Warner, by plucky cricket, put on 105 for the sixth wicket, and the former and Bale 62 for the last. Hardinge carried his bat through the innings for L13—a faultless and most meritorious innings, which lasted three hours and contained fifteen 4’s. Score and analysis:— T he R est . First innings. Lancashire won by an innings and 66 runs. Worcestershire, who placed a weak side in the field, had all the worst of the wicket (owing to rain during the first night), and were beaten by an innings. In the absence of Bale, at Lords, Arnold kept wicket. The foundation of Lancashire’s total was laid by a stand of 96 by Tyldesley and Makepeace, whose rate of scoring was curiously uneven, the first 50 taking 85 minutes to make, and the second only 20. Huddleston hit a 6 and seven 4’s during the hour he was in, and was bowled by Burrows by a ball which sent a bail 67 yds. 6 ins. On the damaged wicket the Lancashire bowlers carried all before them, and Worcestershire were beaten as stated. Score and analysis :— L ancashire . A. Hartley, c Pearson, b Cuffe ... 5 K. G.
