Cricket 1911

300 C R IC K E T : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 1 , 19 11. YORKSHIRE v. SURREY . Played at Leeds on June 26 and 27. Surrey won by four wickets. This match, one of the best-contested during the season, was a bowlers’ game throughout an(L resulted in a closer finish than a margin of four wickets would imply. On Monday 22 wickets fell for 231 runs in less than five hours and a-quarter. There were many changes of fortune during the second day. Ehodes and Drake put on 80 together and the latter and Hirst 77, but the last five wickets added only 21. Left with 166 to win, Surrey were given a fine start by Hayward and Hobbs, who sent up 70 for the first wicket, but it was only through some resolute play later by Bird, Goatly and Davis that Surrey pulled through. The Yorkshire bowling and fielding were excellent. Score and analysis :— First innings. Y o r k sh ir e . Second innings. THE ALL-INDIAN TOUR. 7 th M a tc h — v. STAFFORDSHIRE. Played at Stoke on June 26 and 27. Staffordshire won by five wickets. Although rain prevented a ball being bowled on Monday, the bowlers had matters so much their own way on Tuesday that the match was completed in a single day. Barnes, on a wicket that just suited him, was almost unplayable, his fourteen wickets costing only 29 runs. In his first innings Bajana made four 4’ s and a 6 off Eardley in an over. Mr. H. D. G. LEYESON-GOWER'S XI. Played at Eastbourne on June 26, 27 and 28. Cambridge University won by 71 runs. Except during the first innings of the University, whilst Falcon and Ireland were adding 86 for the fourth wicket, the batsmen never obtained any real mastery over the attack, though in their second Collins and Saville put on 72 together. Crawford bowled well both innings, and also made two useful scores, but at times the cricket was far from attractive. Score and analysis:— C am bridge U n iv e r sity . First innings. Second innings.
