J uly 1 , 1 9 1 1. CR ICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 28o CRICKET IN SCOTLAND. Bain played havoc with a most interesting programme of matches on Saturday, and not a single one was decided. Among the number to suffer was East and West at Partick, which was abandoned without a ball being bowled, and this was tbe more to be regretted as the game was in the nature of a trial for the inter national matches later on. The sides for these matches must now be chosen wholly on club form and past reputation. Since the East v. West match was revived, the Western players have never managed to secure a win, and their chances on this occasion were by no means bright as the eleven they would have placed in the field was far from full strength, many players prefering to assist their clubs than answer the call of the Scottish Union. This is not as it should be, and casts a slight on a body which is doing its best to further the interests of the game in Scotland. More will likely be heard of the matter. H. Wilkinson, the ex-Yorkshire amateur and captain on a few occasions, has been scoring a lot of runs for East Stirlingshire, and was offered his place in the West side but declined. Forfarshire came very near suffering two defeats last week, at the hands of Uddingston and Grange. It is rather curious that such a strong side as Forfarshire always command should never have beaten Uddingston, who have won four out of the last seven matches played between them and drawn three. Still, as a rule, the County are probably rated somewhat higher than they merit, and Uddingston —outside Glasgow—a little lower. The Grange, unless they improve rapidly, are likely to have almost their worst season on record. Despite the succession of hard wickets, J. H. Orr (against the Loretto boys) was the first Grange batsman to reach the century, and Loretto, like all the schools, are very weak in bowling. For the second Saturday in succession the matches in the Northern Counties Championship had to be abandoned. For this reason, and also owing to the quarrel between Perthshire and For farshire, the competition has fallen very flat this season. The dis pute referred to has not yet reached a climax, and everyone is anxiously awaiting further, developments in the shape of the publication of the full correspondence between the clubs. —Played at Dumfries on June 17 and DUMFRIESSHIRE v.
