Cricket 1911

J u ly 1 ,1911 . C E ICK ET : A W EEK LY EECOED OE THE GAME. 283 DERBYSH IRE v. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at Blackwell on June 19, 20 and 21. Warwickshire won by 14 runs. Until the last quarter of an hour a win for Derbyshire appeared probable, for, set 176 to win, they had 100 on the board with only three men out, and, although wickets afterwards fell rather fast, it was bad judgment in running by Humphries and Warren that lost the match. Smith, in scoring 81 without a chance in two hours and a-half, played his highest innings in first-class cricket. He hit nine 4’s and with Kinneir made 67 for the first wicket. Middlesex won by seven wickets. Although rain prevented a ball being bowled on the first day, the visitors, who were moderately represented, could not stave off defeat. In their first innings they had 100 up with only two men out, but the later players could do little against Hearne (J. T.) and Tarrant. Middlesex, owing to a third-wicket stand of 115, led by 49 on the innings, and, being set only 98 to win, obtained the runs with seven wickets in hand. Tarrant was brilliant in his second innings, making 53 out of 65 in half an hour and hitting ten 4’s. He was, however, missed by Board at slip when 23. Score and analysis:— G loucestershire .
