Cricket 1911

282 CR ICK ET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 1, 1911. YORKSH IRE v. KENT . Played at Sheffield on June 19, 20 and 21. Drawn. During the time that play was possible on the opening day Kent scored 270 for five wickets on an easy-paced pitch, the chief honours being claimed by Seymour and Hutchings, whose stand realised 92. The total was taken to 324 on the following morning. The Yorkshire batting was uneven, for, although Rhodes and Bates put on 138 together, the last seven wickets fell for 81 before Day, leaving the visitors with a lead of 38. In their second innings Kent delayed the closure too long, only two hours and 20 minutes being left when Yorkshire went in to get over 300 to win. Seymour played faultless cricket for three hours, and with Woolley added 122 in 75 minutes for the fourth wicket. Against Fielder, who bowled at a rare pace, Yorkshire had three wickets down for 27, and the total was only 31 when Denton left. Hirst and Booth then added 113 without being parted, but the final stage of the game, with a draw assured, was not taken seriously. Nine men bowled during the last stand. The first day’s play was marked by a fine innings by Perrin, who scored 101 without a chance and hit a 5 and seven 4’s—with McGahey he added 118 after four wickets had fallen for 61. Mead bowled admirably in W orcestershire’s first innings, and at one period took five wickets in three overs without a run. In the follow-on, on a much improved wicket, Arnold and Cuffe put on 110 for the fourth wicket in an hour and Simpson-Hayward made 43 out of 61 in 50 minutes. Arnold’s innings was a capital one, and during the two hours 40 minutes he was in m issed no chance of scoring. Set 147 to win, Essex lost Fane at 4 and Perrin at 37, but a third-wicket stand of 103 by Douglas and Freeman put the result beyond doubt. Score and analysis :— First innings. E ssex . F. L.
