264 C R IC K E T : A W EEK LY RECORD OP THE GAME. J un e 2 1 ,1 9 1 1 . KENT v. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. Played at Tonbridge on June 15, 16 and 17. Northamptonshire won by 135 runs. In this match Kent sustained their second defeat of the Week, being headed by 29 runs on the first innings and beaten by 135. The visitors took five hours and a-quarter to make 279 on a good wicket on the first day. The best cricket was seen whilst Thompson and Haywood were together: they added 101 in as many minutes. The Kent batting, notwithstanding an opening partnership of 78, was very weak. Some effective bowling by Woolley caused Kent to be set only 230 to win, but after the heavy rain of Friday night the task proved quite beyond them. Weak batting, however, had as much as the state of the ground to do with their downfall. Score and analysis :— N o rth am pto n sh ire . First innings. W. H. Denton, c Dillon, b Woolley ........... Although losing the toss for the seventh time in succession, Gloucestershire held their own on the first day, getting rid of Lanca shire on a fast pitch for 244 and replying with 93 for two wickets. On the Friday, however, they quite failed to rise to the occasion and when stumps were drawn for the day Lancashire were 250 runs on with half their wickets in hand. The causes of the change were some effective bowling by Cook and a first-wicket stand of 169 by Spooner and Makepeace. The former, the first to leave, hit splendidly all round the wicket and gave no actual chance. His chief hits were seventeen 4’s. Gloucestershire had 329 to win, and, although Board and Dipper made 60 for the opening stand, nine wickets fell for 40 runs after lunch, leaving Lancashire easy winners. Dean took seven wickets for 28 runs. Score and analysis:— L an cash ire . Second innings. ................... 14 c Jessop, b Mills ...........10 7 .................. 58 run out First innings. R. H. M.C.C. and Ground won by six wickets. The University were much weakened in the last of their home matches by the absence of A. J. Evans, Lagden and Braddell and were beaten by the margin stated. In the M.C.C.’s first innings Fane and Mead (C. P.) scored 132 for the opening partnership, and, with Gibson and Buckenham also doing well, a lead of 101 was obtained. Although seven members of the University made double figures in their second innings, the total was only 204 and the visitors made the 104 runs set them without any anxiety. Score and analysis:— R.
