J une 21, 1 9 li . CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 263 ‘ ‘ My own opinion is, Mr. Le Couteur, that McAlister did the right thing in selecting himself. It showed pluck and backbone at any rate.” “ On the whole I agree with you. And though McAlister did not get so many chances during the tour as some other men on the side, he did quite well enough to justify his selection.” “ What are your plans for the future ? ” ‘ ‘ I think it likely I shall go in for teaching. That is what appeals to me most.” ‘ ‘ Does that mean that you will stay in England—at Oxford possibly ? ” ‘ 1 In England for a time, perhaps. Not at Oxford, I think.” Pour Dark Blue wickets had fallen while we talked, and the short time the interviewer was able to spend on the ground was nearing its end. Mr. Le Couteur accompanied him down to the Pavilion gate, and then hurried back to get on his pads. And the interviewer departed, thinking it was odds on Philip liidgeway Le Couteur’s playing for Australia v. England within the next four or five years, and hoping that he might be there to see ! J . N. P e n t e i . o w . M IDDLESEX v. YORKSHIRE. Played at Lord’s on June 15, 16 and 17. Middlesex won by nine wickets. Although they took the whole of the first day to score 353 for eight wickets, Yorkshire in the end were beaten by nine wickets. On a perfect wicket half the side were out for 138, but a stand of 119 by Bates and Wilson pulled the game round. Wilson batted four hours and a-quarter for his most valuable 125, in obtaining which he offered only one chance when 79. Haigh subsequently hit well and the total reached 354. Middlesex lost both Warner and Tarrant early, but Litteljohn and Hearne (J. W.) added 153 together and the latter and Hendren 128. Litteljohn offered no chance, and Hearne did not do so until he had reached three-figures and was hitting out. Hendren, by free cricket, made 84 out of 128 in 87 minutes and was then out to a brilliant running left-handed catch in the long-field. Heavy rain during Friday night made run-getting a most difficult matter on the third day, and Yorkshire were quite unable to recover from being headed 71 on the first innings. Played at Leicester on June 15, 16 and 17. Drawn. After the first Leicestershire wicket had realised 48, Knight and Whitehead added 94 together and the latter and Lord 101. Only five men were out for 282, but the other wickets did little and the innings closed for 314. Whitehead offered only one chance in making 131 out of 219—when 73, and hit a five and twenty-one 4’s : he made capital strokes all round the wicket. For obtaining a lead of 128 Sussex owed something to poor fielding, but more to Vine, who gave no chance in scoring 180 out of 382 in five hours and a-half—his highest innings in first-class cricket: his chief strokes were nineteen 4’s, and with Killick he put on 175 for the second wicket and with Cox 94 for the seventh. Leicestershire, assisted by mistakes in the field, ran up 375 for four wickets upon going in again, Wood and Knight laying the foundation of the score by making 102 for the first wicket. Later, Whitehead and King added 90 and the latter and Mountenay 119. King played fine cricket for his 100, giving only one chance—when 98 to point. There was only an hour left when Sussex went in the second time, and the game was not taken seriously. Score and analysis :— L eicestersh ire . First innings. C. J. B. Wood, c Killick, b Relf (R.
