J u n e 17 , 19 11. CRICKET : A W EEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 255 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. HAMPSHIRE. Played at Bristol on June 12 and 13. Hampshire won by an innings and 103 runs. Hampshire batted the whole of Monday, completing their innings for 537 in that time. Bowell scored 118 in two hours and a-balf without a mistake, and Sprot, hitting very freely, made 50 in 30 minutes and 100 in 45. The latter was missed before scoring and again at 44 and 84, but hit four 6’s and twenty 4’s and with Fielder added 147 for the last wicket in 40 minutes. On Tuesday Gloucestershire were got rid of in two hours for 116. but in the follow-on Jessop and Huggins put on 101 after three wickets had fallen for 15. Jessop, missed when 30, scored 108 out of 160 in 75 minutes, hitting a 5 and seventeen 4’s. Luce made his highest score for the county, but a heavy defeat was always in sight. WORCESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Stourbridge on June 12, 13 and 14. Lancashire won by 372 runs. Scoring ruled somewhat low on the first day, during which eighteen wickets went down for 369 runs. Heap played a capital innings of 73 and added 69 with Whitehead, and, although Burrows made 50 in 80 minutes and six other members of the side reached double-figures, the visitors led by 52 on the innings. Going in again, Spooner and Makepeace scored 232 for Lancashire’s first wicket in 150 minutes. Neither gave a chance, and the former hit eighteen 4’s and the latter sixteen. McLeod subsequently hit very hard, and of the 100 put on for the fifth wicket with Sharp clain?ed 70. He hit three 6’s. To such an extent did Northants outplay Sussex on Monday, that during the day they made 459 in something over five hours and got rid of Vine and Robert Relf for eight runs. Seymour and Smith made 115 for the third wicket, the latter obtaining his 100 without a chance in 100 minutes and hitting sixteen 4’s. Later, J. S. Denton made his first century for the county, scoring 124 in two hours and a-quarter. He hit eighteen 4’s. chiefly drives, and added 81 with East and 115 with Walden. His only chance was when 102. The Sussex batting was very disappointing, and in less than two hours the side were out for 95 and compelled to follow-on 364 behind. Vine atoned for his failure in the first inning3 by making 115 with only one chance—when 63. First in and last out, he added 118 for the third wicket with Smith and 73 for the sixth with Chaplin.
