Cricket 1911

254 CR ICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 17 ,1911. KENT v. ESSEX . Played at Tonbridge on June 12, 13 and 14. Essex won by 256 runs. By watchful and steady methods, which were thoroughly justified. Essex batted four hours and three-quarters on Monday for 293. Perrin showed very skilful cricket for 160 minutes and Carpenter, though uncomfortable for some time, played a most valuable game. The latter added 54 with Perrin, 47 with Gibsou and 35 with Mead. The second day’s play was dwarfed by a splendid display by Hardinge, who, hitting fourteen 4’s, carried his bat through the innings for 123, made in 190 minutes. With the exception of Dillon, who stayed whilst 80 were added, his companions gave him little assistance. Douglas played a characteristic second innings, though he was missed when 44, and with Gillingham put on 93 for the fourth wicket. The latter made fourteen 4’s in his bright 89 and the Essex innings was closed leaving Kent 395 to win. A wretched start was made, Dillon, Hardinge and Seymour all being out for 38. Despite missed catches, Essex continued to hold the upper hand and, Buckenham taking the last five wickets for 26 runs, Kent were beaten by 256. Score and analysis:— E ssex . First innings. J. W. H. Notts, did well to make 412 on the opening day for eight wickets after losing three good men for 27 runs. Hardstaff and John Gunn pulled the game round by addiDg 116. The best cricket seen, however, was whilst Hardstaff and Branston were together. Of the 151 runs they added together the latter, who played brilliant cricket, claimed 106. Hardstatf might have been caught when 123, but Branston gave no chance. Useful scores by Biley and Oates caused the total to reach 481 on Tuesday. Middlesex had three men out for 32, but Hendren was at his best and in 85 minutes scored 70 out of 117 put on for the third wicket. He hit ten 4’s. Hearne (J. W .) played fine cricket for his 109, though he might have been stumped when 82. He hit ten 4’s and with Hearne (J. T.) added 64 for the ninth wicket. In the follow-on the side were seen to greater advantage, thanks chiefly to Warner, who scored 118 in 185 minutes without a mistake. With Hearn6 (J. W .) he put on 74 for the third wicket, and with Hendren 128 for the fourth. Litteljohn and Hearne (J. T.) also did well, and Notts were set 177 to win, a number which, owing mainly to a sound innings by Gunn (G.), they made for five wickets. Score and analysis :— N otts . First innings. A. O.
