Cricket 1911

J une 17, 1911. C E IC K E T : A W EEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 247 LANCASHIRE y . KENT. Played at Manchester on June 8, 9 and 10. Kent won by three wickets. Although they gained a lead of 133 on the first innings, it was only after a hard struggle that Kent pulled oft' tbe match. They did well to get rid of Lancashire for 239, for they had been in the field five hours the day before against Hampshire and had not arrived in Manchester until three o’clock in the morning. It was due to an innings of 196, made in four hours and a-quarter, by Seymour that Kent secured their lead. He was missed when 59 and 108 and three times later, but hit twenty-five 4’s and added 146 with Hutchings, 60 with Woolley and 61 with Fairservice. A third-wicket stand of 157 by Spooner and Sharp, when Lancashire went in again, pulled the game round and, with Whitehead making 50, Kent were left with 222 to make in three hours and a-quarter. Humphreys and Hardinge made 88 for the first wicket. Seymour helped to add 65 and then he and Hutchings left to successive balls. Humphreys played a plucky game but wras missed four times. LE ICESTERSH IRE y . WORCESTERSHIRE. Played at Leicester on June 8 and 9. Worcestershire won by nine wickets. After an even game for a day and a-half, Leicestershire collapsed for 100 on a crumbling wicket against Burrows and Cuft’e, and were beaten as stated. In Worcestershire’s second innings Pearson, in trying to pull a rising ball from Shipman, was struck so severely on the forehead that three doctors were obliged to attend to him on the pitch. He was afterwards carried to the pavilion and it is unlikely that he will be seen again in the team for some time. Score and analysis:— L eicestersh ire . First innings. C. J. B. Derbyshire won by 59 runs. With Morton unavailable owing to influenza, Derbyshire gave a trial to Slater, who batted admirably for an hour and three-quarters and carried out his bat for 43. In response to a total of 220, the home side had half their wickets down for 66, but a useful stand by J. S. Denton and East effected a recovery. Wickstead, in his second innings, batted two hours and forty minutes for 59 and with Oliver put on 59 after the fall of the fourth wicket at 71. Owing to Forester’s successful bowling, Northants. failed to obtain the 207 runs required to win. Haywood, Vials and J. S. Denton all left in the course of an over.
