Surrey made themselves secure on the first day, when they scored 499 in five hours and ten minutes, every player reaching double figures. Hayward, who hit ten 4’s in his 52, made 128 for the first wicket with Hobbs, and Ducat and Hayes added 122 for the third. Smith, hitting a 5 and ten 4’s, scored 69 in 55 minutes, and with Goatly put on 46 in 15 minutes and with Eushby 47 in 25. Fielder, a fast right-hand bowler, took five wickets for 128. Hampshire commenced well, the first wicket realising 92 runs and the third 61, but Hobbs bowled with such success with the new ball provided with the score 200 that the last wickets fell for 46. In the follow-on Pry again did well and with Mead added 106 for the second wicket. Stone batted 65 minutes for 34 and Remnant and Barton put on 73 together. G. Pawson’s XI. by three wickets. The Gaekwad made four 4’s and two 2’s in an over from Burton, and hit fifteen 4’s in his faultless 101. Pawson’s XI. were set 371 to make in three hours and a-half and got the runs with 12 minutes to spare.
