J une 17, 1911. C R IC K E T : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 245 SUSSEX v. ESSEX . Played at Eastbourne on June 8, 9 and 10. Sussex won by 119 runs. On the first day the home side made 269 by very uneven cricket, Vine and Robert Keif scoring 141 for the first wicket and the last nine going down for 128. For Essex, Fane carried off the honours with a faultless innings of 162 which lasted three hours and a-qnarter and contained two 6’s and twenty-three 4’s. Carpenter, his best partner, stayed with him whilst 118 were added for the third wicket. Sussex, by consistent batting, exceeded 300 in their second innings. Killick batted admirably for over two hours and Jupp, who put on 51 for the last wicket with Butt, made seven 4’s in his capital 50. Essex, left with 245 to win, had half their wickets down for 28 and were beaten as stated. Score and analysis :— First innings. S ussex . Relf (R. Although his side were beaten, this match will always be remembered on account of the fine all-round cricket of F. R. Foster. After five wickets were down for 61 he scored 105 in 135 minutes without a chance, hitting a 6 and twelve 4’s and with Lilley adding 96 for the sixth wicket in 55 minutes. Santall and Field also did useful work and the total reached 317. Yorkshire lost Wilson first ball, but Rhodes and Denton added 124 for the second wicket and Hirst and Drake 152 for the fourth. Foster went on to bowl with three wickets down for 299 and in 33 balls took seven wickets for 31 runs. He got rid of Hirst, Booth and Turner in four balls, and in the innings obtained nine wickets. Kinneir and Parsons scored 130 for the first wicket when Warwickshire went in again, but the other players did little and Yorkshire were set 216 to win, a number which, after some anxious moments, was obtained for six wickets.
