D E R B Y S H I R E . Played at Leyton on Ju n e 5, 6 and 7. E ssex won by nine wickets. W inning the toss Derbyshire, on a good wicket, took five hours and a quarter to score 287. Cadman, missed when 2 1, scored 10 3 in four and a-quarter hours, and made 57 with Needham and 14 3 with Forester. Several catches were m issed, and the day’s play was, oa the whole, dull and poor. On Tuesday E ssex made 425 for seven wickets, although Fan e and Douglas were out for 32. Gillingham , however, was at his best and scored 128 in 190 m inutes. He m ight have been caught when 85, but hit sixteen 4’s and put on 185 for the fifth wicket with M cGahey. Carpenter and Gibson also did well, and put on 73 together, and the former and Gibson 56. The visitors, 18 3 behind, had three men out for 43, but useful scores by W ickstead, Forester, Chapman and Je lf caused E ssex to go in again for 69, a number they obtained for the loss of one wicket. They owed everything to Lewis and Johnson, who added 159 for the second wicket in 1 1 5 minutes. The former, whose play was faultless, hit thirteen 4’s. Gloucestershire won by five wickets.
