J une 10, 1911. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 227 SURREY v. SUSSEX. Played at the Oval on Ju n e 1 , 2 and 3. Surrey won by five wickets. W ith four of their players at Sheffield, Surrey did well to win by five wickets. They gained a big lead on the first day, dism issing Sussex for 12 2 and passing that total with only two wickets down. Hayward and Hayes added 97 together and the latter and D avis 52. In their second innings Sussex had four good wickets down for 97, and it seemed that the game would be over on Friday. Sm ith, how ever, was missed at tbe wicket first ball he received, and he remained to put on 16 1 with Vine in 1 1 5 minutes. Vine might have been caught when 15 , but made no other m istake. He hit ten 4’s and Smith fourteen. Later, Chaplin ran up 55 in 50 minutes, reaching 50 out of 7 1 in 40, and the total reached 344. Surrey were left with 103 to win, and, owing chiefly to a second wicket stand of 88 by Hayward and Goatly, made the runs for the loss of five men. Score and an aly sis: — S u s s e x . First innings. DERBYSH IRE . Played at Southampton on Ju n e 1, 2 and 3. Hampshire won by 20 runs. In scoring 344 after being set 365 to win Derbyshire accom plished a great performance and fairly shared the honours of the game. In Hampshire’s first innings Bowell and Brown added 126 together, but so well did Forester bowl afterwards that the last eiyht wickets went down for 44. Thanks to a last wicket-stand of 7 1, Derbyshire led by 58 when the game was half over, but their advan tage was more than balanced by a first-wicket stand of 194 by Bowell and F ry when Hants went in again. Neither player made a m istake, and the latter, during the three hours and a-half he was in, hit eighteen 4’s, mostly drives. White, in scoring 59, hit two 6’s and eight 4’s. In the final stage of the game Derbyshire had seven men out for 134, but Morton and Oliver put on 88 for the eighth wicket and the latter and Chapman 1 18 for the ninth. Cadman was let off when 18, Oliver when 67 and Chapman when 20. Score and an aly sis:— H a m p s h ir e . First iunings. Stone, c Humphries, b Warren ...............
