Cricket 1911
226 CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. J une 10, 1911. KENT y . GLOUCESTERSHIRE . Played at Gravesend on Ju n e 1 , 2 and 3. K ent won by 263 runs. Although, owing to the T rial game at Sheffield, they were without several of their regular players, Kent won very e a sily ; Gloucestershire, however, were handicapped greatly by the absence of Jessop. A. P. Day played a delightful innings of 135 notout, and, driving with great power, hit two 6’s and sixteen 4‘s. Apart from a chance at the wicket when 73, he made no m istake. The side went right ahead in their second innings, and left the visitors with 392 to win. Hardinge and D ay added 7 1 together and Hubble and Troughton 82, whilst H atfeild, driving and pulling vigorously, ran up 74 out of 97 in 35 m inutes : his strokes were a 6, fourteen 4’s, a 3, a 2 and seven singles. Dipper showed capital form for Gloucestershire, batting for two hours in each innings, but the others could do little. Score and analysis :— First in n in g s . K e n t . Neither side was at full strength, but the University, in winning by 69 runs, did a meritorious thing. The foundation of their score of 220 was laid by Ireland and Falcon, who put on 105 together, and Prest, who scored 57. It seemed as though Yorkshire would be a very long way behind on the innings, but a last wicket stand of 65 by Radcliffe and Bayes improved matters considerably. Cambridge scored consistently upon going in again, but when Wilson and Denton had added 91 for the county’s second innings it seemed as though the University might, after all, be beaten. The last seven wickets, however, went down for 40. Score and analysis :— C ambridge U niversity . First innings. D. C. Collins, c Newstead, b Bayes .......... 7 S. H.
