Although neither Joh n Tyldesley, Dean nor Mr. Hornby appeared, Lancashire won with remarkable ease. They gave a trial to Fairclough, a slow left-hand bowler who made a good impression. In his first innings, although scoring only 19— he is right-handed as a batsman—he helped Makepeace to add 76 in 50 minutes. It was in their second innings that the side went right ahead. After H artley had been foolishly run out Spooner and Tyldesly put on 19 1 in 110 minutes, the latter (missed when 6, at slip) obtaining his first hundred for the county. He hit sixteen 4’s, and Spooner, whose play was without blemish, 20. Heap and McLeod hit up 67 in half-an-hour, and Somerset were set 490 to win. Brearley again bowled with marked success, and Lancashire won by the m argin stated. Score and analysis : — First innings. L a n c a s h ir e . R. H. Spooner, c Chidgey, b Lewis A.
