CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. June 1 0 , 1911. Correspondent:?. [The Editor does not hold himself responsible for the opinions o f his correspondents.] To the Editor of C ricket. H ARD H IT T IN G . D ear S ir, — I observe in your paper and others a great deal o^ discussion about aggregate scores off an o v er; I venture to suggest that Ben Griffith’s performance at H astings off George Bennett stil holds the record ; 4 balls 24 runs. He hit each ball out of the ground. Yours faithfully, London, E .C . H A R R IS. [Griffith made 24 runs off a four-ball o v er; Alletson 34 off eight deliveries — a six-ball over which contained two no-balls. The form er’s average of runs per ball is therefore the better. In that mine of information, the History of Kent County Cricket , it is stated (page 270) that in a m atch played at Watford, between 1828 and 1832, between W atford and Hertfordshire, W. H . Caldecourt made six hits for six each off an over of Bix balls, each delivery being sent out of the ground—a feat which has been repeated more than once during recent years, when bats have possessed more driving power than the old ones. But during our winter of 1893-4 it was recorded that in the course of a game at Bonbury, Western A ustralia, a player skied a ball into a three-pronged branch of a tall Jarrah tree. The umpire declared that, as the ball was in sight, it could not be lost. No axe was procurable to fell the tree, and the ball was eventually brought down by a shot from a rifle, but not before the batsmen had run 286 ! So far as we are aware this stands as the largest number of runs obtained in the course of an over. The late Rev. J . F . Scobell was once credited with a hit for 39 in a match between Gentlemen of Devon and Gentlemen of D orset.— E d itor, Cricket .] P U B L IC SCHOOL C R IC K E T . S ir, — In your issue of April 29th, I read an article on Public School Cricket in 1 9 1 1 , by C. M. Scott. In writing of the M arl borough Captain, E . A. Shaw , he said :— “ Instances in which a boy has been in his school eleven for five seasons and captain for three must be very rare.” In Ceylon the feat is a very rare one and only two school boys have obtained this distinction, D . L . de Saram played in the St. T hom as’ X I. in 1898, ’99, 1900, ’0 1 and ’02. He was captain of his side in the last three seasons. S. P. Foenander played in the Wesley College eleven in 1899, 1900, ’0 1, ’02 and ’03, and was skipper in the last three years at school. Yours truly, Colombo, Ceylon, M ay 14, 1 9 11 . “ U B IQ U E .” [B . Jayaram , now in England with the A ll-India team, was captain of the Central College, Bangalore, for six seasons.— E d itor, Cricket .] HORNSEY v. S O U TH G A TE.— Played at Hornsey on June 3.
