Cricket 1911
216 CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. J une 3, 1911. County Secretaries. I.—M b . C. B* LEATHES PRIOR. The work done by a county secretary—paid or unpaid —is often insufficiently appreciated by the supporters of his county. Even when affairs are going smoothly there is plenty of what the Australians picturesquely term ‘ ‘ hard graft ” attached to the office ; and when they do not. go smoothly it needs real enthusiasm and pluck, as well as executive ability, to carry on with a stiff upper lip and a high heart, and make the best of a bad job. It is open to doubt whether among all the county secretaries in England there is one more thoroughly keen and enthusiastic than Mr. Charles Bolingbroke Leathes Prior. He is Norfolk by every tie, for he was born at Norwich on .January 28th, 1883, and has spent the greater part of his life in the county. It is only a little more than two years ago since he took office, but in that short time he has done wonders. And this is said with no intention of disparagement to his predecessor, a gentleman to whom M r. C. B. L E A T H E S PRIOR. the thanks of all who care for Norfolk cricket are due. Mr. Buxton has not dropped out of cricket management ; he has become Chairman of Committee, in which post his long experience should be of the utmost value. During the last two years a real attempt has been made to organise Norfolk cricket on a systematic basis. The county has been split up into six divisions, East, South, Mid and West Norfolk, Yarmouth District, and Lynn District. Inter-divisional matches were arranged for the season 1910 ; for 1911 the Club and Ground has games with most of the divisions, the inter-divisional encounters having probably been found difficult to work off. Time is needed to set a comprehensive scheme like this fairly going, and nothing is gained by undue hurry. But the scheme in itself is a big step in the right direction, and, whether Mr. Prior was the originator of it or no, upon him has fallen most of the work connected with it. That Norfolk should have won the Minor Counties’ Championship in the present secretary’s second year of office is not, of course, primarily due to his efforts ; yet there is no doubt that his keenness helped. He is in close touch with the players, and, though a nasty accident to one of his wrists keeps him from playing often, he turns out now and then for the Club and Ground. In 1906 and 1907 he appeared once or twice for the county. Mr. Prior was educated at Haileybury, but, leaving early, never got into the eleven or fifteen, though Mr. P. H. Latham—an excellent judge—looked upon him at one time as a coming bowler. He has played Bugby football for the Eastern Counties. J. N. P e n t e l o w . CRICKET IN SCOTLAND. ABERDEENSHIRE v. ST.
