J u n e 3 ,1 9 1 1 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 215 NOTTINGHAMSHIRE y . LANCASHIRE . Played at Nottingham on May 29, 30 and 31. Drawn. A fter being beaten by Derbyshire and Middlesex, Lancashire took the field on Monday without John Tyldesley, Brearley and Hornby. Thanks to a stand of 154 by John Gunn and Hardstaff, and one of 72 by Payton and Lee, Notts, made 314 . Lancashire made a splendid start, the opening partnership realising 109, the second 50 and the third 59, but the later men did little and the innings closed for 288. Tyldesley, last out, hit nine 4‘s in making his highest score in first-class cricket. During the last two hours of Tuesday, Notts increased their advantage by making 16 1 for two wickets. Jones left at 49. but George Gunn and Hardstaff then put on 112 , the latter, when play ceased for the day, being 57 not out. On Wednesday he took his score to 83 before being cau gh t: he hit eleven 4’s and made his aggregate for the match 15 5. Lancashire were left with 354 to win in about three hours-and-a-half, and a draw was always in sight. Tyldesley (W.), played another good innings, as did Spooner. Score and an alysis:— N otts . F ry was one of the players originally chosen, but he announced his inability to take part in the match,^ ESSEX v. M IDDLESEX . Played at Leyton on May 29, 30 and 3 1. Drawn, Middlesex made themselves secure on the first day, when they ran up 422 for seven wickets. The foundation of the large score was laid by Warner and Tarrant, who made 17 1 for the first wicket. The former was very fortunate for, in addition to being missed from the first ball he received, he was let off at 1 , 12 and again when 111 . He batted HO minutes and hit eleven 4’s. Hearne (J. W .) and Hendren continued the good work by adding 148 for the fourth wicket, and Anson making a useful 48 on Tuesday the total fell only two short of 500. For their total of 228 E ssex owed almost every thing to Douglas, Carpenter and Reeves. The two first-named added 62 in 87 minutes, whilst Reeves, hitting very finely, actually made his 7 1 out of 89 in three-quarters of an hour. Douglas, ninth out, scored 80 out of 2 17 in 200 m inutes, m aking no m istake and hitting ten 4’s. It was a most valuable innings. W ith nothing but a draw to hope for Essex had small need of enterprise on Wednesday. Their cricket in fact was very dull, but before play ceased they had obtained a lead with four wickets in hand. Perrin and Freem an put on 162 for the third wicket. Score and analysis :— M id d l e s e x . P. F. Warner, c McGahey, b Buck: enham .......................................
