Cricket 1911

J une 3, 1911. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 207 NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. SURREY . Played at Northampton on May 25, 26 and 27. Surrey won by one wicket. Although Surrey, on the first day, dismissed the home side for 239 and then equalled that total with seven wickets in hand, they had to struggle severely at the end to pull off the match. In Northants.’ first innings Seymour and W . H. Denton made 95 for the first wicket and Walden and Haywood 70 for the sixth, but the others did little against Lees. It was by consistent batting that Surrey were so well positioned by the end of the day, Goatly, Hayes and Ducat helping Hobbs to make 72, 77 and 59 for the first three wickets respectively. The last-named scored 92 by free cricket in two hours, giving no chance and hitting a dozen 4’s. Rain prevented a ball being bowled on the second day, and on the third they led by only 5 1 when their innings closed. Sm ith taking seven wickets for 62, Surrey were set only 80 to win, but the wicket was then at its worst and the winoing hit was made with the last pair in. (All Publications intended for review in “ Cricket" must be addressed to the Editor.) W ARW ICK SH IRE CRICKET. Sydney Santall has done rare good work in the “ H istory of W arwickshire Cricket,” published (at sixpence in paper cover and one shilling in more durable binding) by Cricket and Sports Publishers, Ltd., of 115 - 117 , Cannon Street. He begins nearly a century back, but soon reaches the year 1864, in which W arwickshire first had a county club. Thence the story is carried right down to 19 10 , with scores of the more interesting matches, complete lists of results each year, and many capital photographs by way of illustration. At the end are carefully compiled statistics, brief biographies of leading players, and a list of all players who have represented the county at any time. Santall’s own style is clear and businesslike, as one m ight expect, lacking “ purple patches,” but therefore all the more suitable to the matter in hand ; and the introductory chapters by Messrs. W. Ansell, R . V. Ryder and H. W . Bainbridge are full of interest. Reading them, one feels that one will be able to pick up the book again in a year’s time and read then anew with both pleasure and profit. Everyone interested in county cricket should make a point of getting this book. CRICKET HANDBOOKS. The forty-third edition of the “ Cricket Calendar ” (published by the “ Cricket P ress,” 25, Temple Chambers, E .C .) should be invalu able to cricketers as a diary and companion. It contains specially tabulated pages for keeping a record of individual batting and bowling averages, county and club fixtures, list of umpires, and other items of interest. The same office have also published a new edition of their “ Cricket Directory,” containing the addresses of the secre taries of clubs, which should be useful to club secretaries.
